browsing around for new laptop... twice as cheap in the US?

filtered out the one that comes closest to what i want, it's the Lenovo Thinkpad Yoga 14 inch with wacom powered pen capabilities for my cartoon work. It's called the Thinkpad Yoga 460 here. With SSD its almost ?1500.

While searching i came across a best buy link. $900, open box for $800. Thats more than twice as cheap. Knowing that i am not so eager to shell out 1500 euros. It would feel like flushing ?800 down the toilet. What the fuck

Buy a used Surface Pro 3. It has the best pressure sensitivity of any of the touch screen tablet/laptops. Microsoft also worked hand an hand with adobe to make the surface work well with Photoshop.

You can pick them up used for $500 pretty easily. The surface pro 4 has battery issues though so I'd stay away from it unless they have fixed that.

14 inch is a must, not smaller or bigger, so unfortunately thats not an option.

So fly over and buy it. The reason it costs more there is the tax on imports.

Just come over here, buy it, take it out of the box, use it so you have programs on your desktop should you be asked to show it is used when reentering your country at customs.

People do this daily. No big deal. :thumbsup

Also consider US have no VAT as PART of why it is cheaper. You would probably pay VAT if you decided to order it from US.
Ps: speaking about that, consider that they may charge sales tax of something like 6-9%.

I went into BestBuy lookin' for a laptop replacement for my aging 17" Acer.

Came away with a 24" all-in-one Acer desktop. Paid around $800Cdn - but it worked out cheaper than the laptop equivalent.

I figured I seldom take the laptop outta the office anyways (only once...on a trip to Aruba)...so why the hell should I go with another laptop?

So, point being...do you really need laptop mobility?

Well played. Some people make stupid mistake of buying laptop for desktop use.

As for OP, since he is looking at specifically 14 inch I bet that he needs the mobility. 13-14 inch is best for mobility and decent enough size. 15 is hardly mobile (maybe once a week or so) and 17 inch is absolutely inconvenient for being mobile, so maybe once every few months etc when you move houses, go to the cabin etc.

Agreed with mostly what you said...although it was a 17" I hauled to the Caribbean - but it didn't fit properly in the softcase I'd bought...and was generally a PITA the whole time. But I'd wrestled with the alternative ideas at the time - and it seemed the lesser of all evils.

maybe ill get one off ebay US. Including import vat of $200 it's €500 or so cheaper than buing it here.

as for flying to the US, no thanks. Just had a vaction, back and forth 10 hours in a plane, and i cant stand that anymore. This time i really fucking hated it, way more than i used to. Fuck that.

Nothing that a valium and a few drinks will not fix.

The time really flies with you are as high as the plane.

Murica fuck yeah!

I don't know how people can work on ms surface it's so small. I find even 15.6 1080p the text is small and scaling results in fuzzy looking text.

I've actually never owned a laptop always just a desktop for work and iPhone for the road. Last black friday sale said fuck it and scooped like a $450-$500 Dell that was on sale for $299 online at Best Buy at like 1 a.m. Have only used it like twice since then so maybe the reason I never owned one. Will come in handy on vacation though. I buy all my computer shit from Micro Center - Computers, Electronics, Computer Parts, Networking, Gaming, Software, and more! or Best Buy: Expert Service. Unbeatable Price.

I have one as well, It's awesome and you can be so much more productive being able to use the stylus and just clicking on the screen. My only complaint, is mine will sometimes loses it's connection to the keyboard and the only way to get it back is a reboot. I assume it's the keyboard because it never loses the stylus.

The other issue is much more annoying. It doesn't keep time. I'm running win10 and when ever I turn it off it will lose time. Like I used it today around 3pm and just turned it on and the time was 6pm not 12:30.

I've tried all the automatic time update options and none of them fix the issue. Supposedly it's a win10 issue not the surface pro.

Manfap 03-09-2016 12:58 AM

that includes 300 euros iva/vat that you can claim back though.

Paul&John 03-09-2016 01:14 AM

Wasn't import VAT or something for most of electronics erased lately?

What are you talking about? Short answer - no.

pornguy 03-09-2016 08:53 AM

I think when it comes to something that specific ( art you mentioned ) then yeah the US most likely has the better deals.

We did manage to get a great laptop in spain for about 300$ less after conversion.
