The PlayStation 2 Officially Dies Today - Last Servers Shutting Down

A sad day March 31st, 2016 is for gaming. 16 years ago, the PlayStation 2 released world wide. It was a revolutionary console that set Sony on a path of gaming greatness that they maintain to this very day.

While the original PlayStation came first, it?s undeniable that the PlayStation 2?s success is the driving force behind the brand today. The PlayStation 2 is the highest selling console with over 155 million units sold. The second best selling console is the original PlayStation, marking over 102 million units.

In comparison, the original Xbox, released only one year after the PS2, has sold only 24 million units. That?s just how huge of an impact the PS2 has had on gaming throughout the turn of the century.

The reason for this article is that today, Final Fantasy XI?s servers are officially shutting down on the legendary console. This marks the last online functionality for the PS2, which is unfortunately the send off of an era.

The PlayStation 2?s iconic start up screen will forever be cemented in our memories. It truly was the console of gaming revolution that propelled the industry into what its become today, and impacted an entire generation.

At your local petrol station, notice pump number 2 has a bucket next to it with sand in, it says it's for emergencies, take advantage of that, they do market the number 2 above it :2 cents:

It's like when you find out Keith Richards is still alive.....but you thought he died 10 years ago, for some reason.

Oddly enough i had PS1, PS3 and currently own a PS4.

Was PS2 out during the same time as Sega Dreamcast maybe? If so that would suggest why i missed that one...

It's not dead by any means.. just online play for the last game that supported it. The console is mod-able to play lots of different games.. Also retro gaming is alive and well, I sell tons of old systems and these are far from dead.

Like others I had PS1 and 3 only.. I've been thinking about getting PS4 but the only thing I use my 3 for is a blu ray player.. So I bought the Wii U instead cause wii bowling is a fun drinking game and that is the only time I have to play games. :2 cents:
