Disappointed in VR so far..

So I stopped by best buy to demo the Samsung Gear VR with a Galaxy S6 phone, which apparently has a higher resolution than the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift.

I put it on, and the first thing I immediately noticed were a ton of tiny black dots that separated what I assume were individual pixels. The clarity just wasn't there.

At best, it's like watching a 1080p video maxed out on a 4k monitor. Or a 720p video maxed on a 2k monitor.

Maybe I'm too bent out of shape over graphics, but it seems to me that until they can get higher resolution, it's not going to take off.

I'd love to drop the cash on the HTC Vive, but if it's similar in quality to Gear VR, it's just not worth it imo.

Anyone try Gear VR + oculus or vive?

Piper Blush 04-04-2016 07:54 AM

I have the Oculus DK2 and the Gear, I have pre-ordered the Vive and the new Oculus.

I'm sure it will take off. Right now, because of the lower price of the Gear, it is more accessible to people. Don't get confused, it is not the same experience as the Oculus and the Vive. The Gear VR doesn't get you that immersion you need for it to become Virtual Reality. It's all flat!

The Oculus and the Vive have positional tracking, making the experience all the more immersive even though the resolution is not at it's peak yet.

I am also disappointed in VR. I asked VR to lend me a tenner till the end of the week, and VR refused!

VR could have easily afforded to lend me that tenner, hence my disappointment !

Agree with MaDalton here.
Gear VR has 3D and way better resolution/optics compared to the Oculus dev kit. I'm chinese and I know their optics supplier. It's crap

Don't count VR out :D

From what my friend at Sprint told me, The Gear VR was originally designed for Real Estate clients. Virtual tours are apparently quite popular for higher end clients that can't be on tours in person.

I've had my Oculus on preorder since day 1. Hoping to see it shipped this month.

Until then, I have a fancy plastic version of google cardboard and my iphone 6plus. Neat for watching 3d videos on youtube but I want to play some cool games.

freecartoonporn 04-04-2016 11:22 PM

you should try

freefly VR headset + 4k screen android phone. + VR video recorded in pure 4k

dont judge VR by samsung gear VR. theres a whole lot to it. e.g. resolution , FOV, FPS, Frequency , Tracking and movements are other things.

This is the best VR-related video I've seen so far

So for graphics, it's not, "which one's best", it's "which one's the worst". As they all sound terrible :2 cents:

Waiting for realistic holograms , then I'll give VR a go.
I hope I live that long.

if I understand Microsoft Hololens correctly, we're not that far from a 3D girl stripping right in front of you

question is who will be the first to do that - developer edition is $3000

MaDalton 04-05-2016 04:11 AM

so who will set up the first cam studio with this technology?

i am pretty sure there is a ton of potential customers that will pay $10+ per minute to have a girl interacting with them in their own room

at least part of the future - that's sure

and since it also has a playback feature, you can also sell prerecorded scenes - resize the playback so you can either enjoy the girl doing it on your desk or lifesize in the middle of your room. this is going to be awesome but i assume whoever does this first, will need really deep pockets.

Anyone with too much money wants to partner up? :winkwink:

As I pointed out in another thread I am skeptical, sure its a thing everyone will try but I expect once they do they will return to the tubesites.

in order to get true VR you need to dynamically generate the environment, otherwise your position in the space is fixed, you can turn your head but you cant lower/raise it, you cant walk around the environment so it simply becomes an IMax movie so to speak and the thing with dynamically generated scene is that it never happened, so the actors/actresses are computer generated. It can certainly find a porn niche there but thats a pretty far ways off I expect.

Dont get me wrong there are HUGE markets for this type of VR, in education and other areas but as a movie device it doesnt really integrate you into the production you are merely strapped to a chair in one spot watching what happens around you.

In a game, say something like skyrim where your environment is dynamically generated, so you can move around in the environment this has HUGE potential, no doubt it will change gaming. but as a vehicle for porn or watching movies in general I suspect it lacks the mobility and versatility needed to make it immersive enough to keep it interesting.

Give it some time. It's only in it's infancy.

All I've seen is crappy Google Cardboard VR and I've been mega-impressed, because I can see the future advances this tech can and will make. To be complaining about it already is ridiculous.

There's no doubt in my mind that it will eventually be fantastic. I posted this because I don't really see this initial push here in 2016 being all that it's cracked up to be.

Oh it seems to be all it's cracked up to be. You may not be easily impressed, but people are talking about Occulus and Vive like it's the tits.

Are you one of those guys who hates everything? Every movie that gets a great review you're like "eh, been there done that".
