Czech Republic leaders approve plan to change country's name to Czechia

Czechia will soon be synonymous with the Czech Republic.

Unlike most European countries, the Czech Republic has lacked a one-word version of its name in foreign languages.

Now, the country is set to use the name Czechia in English, Tschechien in German or Tchequie in French, translations of ?Cesko? in Czech.

The Foreign Ministry said a one-word name is more practical and flexible for various uses.

Neighbouring Slovakia is officially the Slovak Republic. Similarly, Russia is used for the Russian Federation.

Czech leaders, including president Milos Zeman, prime minister Bohuslav Sobotka, speakers of both chambers of Parliament and the foreign and defence ministers met Thursday and endorsed the new name.

In a statement, they said ?it is recommended to use a one-word name in foreign languages if it is not necessary to use the formal name of the country?.

LOL Always has been Чехия (Czechia) in Russian.

seeandsee 04-15-2016 05:46 AM

I don't like it :)

MaDalton 04-15-2016 05:47 AM

if only Americans would realize it's not Czechoslovakia anymore since 1993 - that would help already

From now on CZ will be even more confused with Chechnya and I wait for the first Czech tourist that gets shot by airport security cause they can't keep it apart.

Looks like the next European Summit is going to be in Czechia... :upsidedow

HowlingWulf 04-15-2016 07:05 AM

I don't know about this.

"The Czech Republic" stands the fuck out.

Czechia just makes it another "-ia" country to be confused with Romania, Bulgaria, Albania, etc.

Sid70 04-15-2016 07:07 AM

A better choice would be CZ ( seezee ), like MC.

celandina 04-15-2016 07:44 AM

Realy stupid that they did not leave things be.... The Moravians are already bitching... So if you have to change then go back to the Nazi German version "Bohemia and Moravia" or BoMo for short:1orglaugh:

.... Just as good as "seezee" :)

Fucked up just as all other "pinko" countries ending on "....ia"

If it has to change I still vote for "BoMo"

Paul Markham 04-15-2016 07:55 AM

Another couple of billion going on a pointless exercise.

I guess Czechia is just another zone in the EU now, no longer a sovereign state, calling it a 'Republic' no longer makes sense

pimpmaster9000 04-15-2016 09:24 AM

we always called them "Če?ka" ...a czech person is Čeh...

The map shows two different states though.

Soon as I saw it, I was thinking the same, too close to "Chechnya" :2 cents:

Actually it's not true. For example Czech Republic was called "Czechy" in Poland, "T?ehhi" in Estonia, "Čekija" in Lituania and "Τσεχία" in the Greece...

Haha speaking of Czechoslovakia here is a brand new video from Staffordshire Police's where in the ending credits they have the following: "The 56-year-old who is from Czechoslovakia..." :) However the video descriptions is correct..

We were talking to a neighbor who is a minister in the Government. He's sick to death with the endless feed of legislation coming from Brussels and Strausberg. It'sd impossible to keep up with it all.

The EU will fail sooner rather than later. Hopefully, the UK will kick the collapse into motion. Then we get on trading with each other. The only thing holding the UK OUT vote is all the lying politicians claiming the EU would make itself poorer by not having an open trade deal with the UK.
