Those with long ancestory ties to the US

I'm curious of those of you with long ancestry ties in the US, doesn't it seem like you always end up being related to someone who "was" someone "special" someone who did this or that?

Do you think it's usually BS as trying to link family histories back that far ends with miss matches or do you think due to a smaller population back then you are pretty likely to be related to this person or that person?

My distant ancestor invented the longer lasting lightbulb. And a few other things.

True fact. :)

Only one person in our industry has figured out who I am related to.

I think its the smaller population size . At one point in time if you weren't producing you most likely weren't surviving. No welfare, grants, etc back then.

my folks were Irish sharecroppers, just trying to feed the kids... nobody important or special... there are a few people with the same last name as mine however I have no idea if we are related..

Bladewire 04-16-2016 10:38 AM

My ancestors were Irish on one side, Italian on the other, both immigrated to US in the early mid 1800's and lived in the slums of New York as second class citizens with the blacks. Yipeee

Well one of mine was apparently hung as a horse thief.. :1orglaugh

However another was supposedly a assistant for General Grant in the Civil War. They said he joined under the age and was in Grant's division. Once they found out he was way too young he was supposedly made his assistant. I do know I had another relative on the on the Southern side and supposedly they were both at the battle of lookout mountain on apposing sides.

Then one of my Grandmother's brothers was awarded the medal of Honor during WWII for killing lots of Japanese on one of the islands. He supposedly took out a machine gun position with a bulldozer.

In the grand scheme of things there havent been that many generations of US Citizens so if your family has been here a long time the odds that it goes back to someone important in the scheme of US history are quite high...Ancestry.com for instance knows this and capitalizes on it

I heard mine were Adam & Eve

according to ancestry, we're all related to julius caesar, heck a gfyer or 2 has started a chest thumping thread about it, too funny.

Came over on the Mayflower on my fathers side.

Relative was one of the signers of the Mayflower charter and died the first winter. Good thing he brought over 2 sons which both survived.
