GoPro is finally shipping its massive professional VR rig
After months of delays, the 16-camera virtual reality rig that GoPro built with Google has finally shipped. GoPro tells The Verge that Odyssey, as it's called, has made it out to the first few companies that were vetted as part of a "limited access" pilot program.
GoPro declined to comment on the exact number of customers who have received or even applied to buy Odyssey, but did name VR production companies WEVR, VRSE, Specular Theory, Surreal, and Two Bit Circus as some of the first to receive the rig. Odyssey is not your everyday virtual reality capture device. The big, spaceship-like rig costs $15,000 and uses 16 cameras to shoot three-dimensional 360-degree video. The price tag includes 16 of the company's flagship Hero 4 Black cameras, a microphone, the rig structure itself, all the necessary cables, and a Pelican case, as well as a warranty, support, and access to Google's servers. This is awesome. With the new VR headsets, this footage will be very popular. Who will make youtubeVR? Hopefully there's an interface from the Oculus to a site like that, and you can just experience VR places from around the world.

I changed the lenses on the hero's I used on my drones 5 years ago. Work pretty good now. This cam has 360 totally electronically "de-skewed" image on it's output & Seamless stitching between the lens's. But that cam is not "omni-spheric 3D" like the OZO but is "pano-spheric 3D". No upper or lower image is captured. Many times that is not needed and it does help with the stream and capture rates same as NON-3D cams do, but much lost in immersion. But on the other hand, I think Gopro has taken the totally wrong approach to VR/360 cams with this and the other NON-3D version with 6 cams. They need to go back to the drawing board and build it from the ground-up. However, if you are looking to shoot good 3D adult, you only need a 3D kit and 2 standard hero's. No, you don't get the 360 & head tracking, but it is still "very good" 3D video on the cheap. With the release of the VUZE and VOKE , GoPro is going to find themselves behind the curve in this segment they started soon enough in ACTION/SPORTS CAM's . While those cams are not sports cams, it shows just how fast things are moving. Dozens of company's are racing to be the first to do '360 action cams' and we have seen nothing from GoPro that shows they are on top of their game anymore for their game.
