Someone just bought and gifted me a $60 game on Steam

Is this a common thing? Buying games for people you don't know?

The backstory:
A few years ago I wrote an article on how to succeed at another game on single player playing on insanity mode. This guy over in Europe read that article and I guess it made a difference for him because today he messaged me thanking me profusely for writing it and then he sent me a gift game over Steam called "Dying Light", a zombie killer I think.

Any of you played it? By the trailer it looks pretty good...

I'm kind of floored by this. The gift I mean. He sent the $60 version, not the $19 one.

Jigster715 06-02-2016 06:19 PM

Its a common way for people who have hacked steam to get access to other peoples info. A gift out of the blue? Doubtful. Be careful.

MrBottomTooth 06-02-2016 06:35 PM

Dying light is a great game at least. I have it on xbox one. I don't play on pc much anymore so I'm not up on the latest steam scams. Sounds suspicious for sure. Although in a world where people donate hundreds of dollars to twitch streamers, I guess it's not out of the realm of possibility that it is just some weirdo sending you a gift.

Spunky 06-02-2016 06:38 PM

It's ok as far as zombie games go.I played it on PS4

MrBottomTooth 06-02-2016 06:41 PM

I suppose there's a possible danger of losing your steam account if the game was purchased with a stolen credit card. Although in most cases they would probably just delete the game from your account.

That's the gamer community. :thumbsup

I thought you could use some cheering up

It came through the steam gift system, looks legit to me. I can double check with steam if I see anything out of the norm but so far nothing.

Seriously? I've been on a number of gaming and game forums for many years now, nothing like this has ever happened to me. But the guy didn't just send the game over, he was trying to get me on chat for nearly a year to thank me for that article I wrote (about the game Left4Dead if I recall correctly)

I got the impression he really likes this newer game and wants me to play it.

This is most likely promotional

SekobA 06-03-2016 11:07 AM

In instant-messaging over the Steam chat thing with the guy it really doesn't feel like that's the case. It seems like I said he just really REALLY liked the step-by-step post on the Steam forums I made a few years ago about how best to successfully beat L4D on single-player whilst playing in hardcore mode. Seems he simply wanted to thank me for it. I guess it helped him or something.

*shrugs*

Thanks, I'll be checking it out in the next week or so. Trailer does look good, you're right.

I've been a youtube gamer for quite some time now and it very common for thankful people to send games and donations. If you were a streamer and gave such a good tip to someone as thankful you quite possibly could have gotten more. It really is unbelievable the amount that well established streamers get in donations. I myself have gotten gifted games from fans and have gifted quite a few myself.

There of course is the vile side of the gaming community, but as we all know, that goes with any industry.

its a really good game, enjoy it. its free anyway.

T-Rain From Tacoma 06-07-2016 12:29 AM

I have Left4Dead 2... its good.. Is that an offshoot of it or just similar subject matter..

_Richard_ 06-07-2016 12:32 AM

i think you can get free games or ways to give out free games. So it's possible he didn't pay the amount ot send to you

HowlingWulf 06-07-2016 08:24 AM

People giving free games to others is not that uncommon, especially if you've written a guide or helpful tip for a game. Some people are really appreciative.

This one definitely isn't free. I looked it up as soon as he mentioned it, found a $19 version (basic) and a $59 version (enhanced). Before I could even think about buying it myself he sent it. It was the enhanced.

If you ever do find those details I'd be interested in knowing them. This game-gifting-to-complete-strangers thing is all new to me.
