What's the differnce between a motel and hotel?

We only have hotels, B&B's and guest houses around here so what is a motel?

Is it a hotel but Americans call it a hotel? Do they not call hotels hotels.

If I wanted to book a hotel in Orlando should I search for motels?

Does Google geographically correct the search to - Did you mean Hotel?

Hannes 06-12-2016 04:04 PM

I'm sure a motel if for a one night stay over, and a hotel well... everyone knows what a hotel is.

mikesouth 06-12-2016 04:08 PM

I think generally speaking Motel is 2 stories or less...a contraction of the old Motor Inns. Hotel is the most common use these days and covers everything

You live in the USA. Do a search for motels in Florida and tell me if it corrects to Hotels in FLorida and then try the other way around.
BTW. I would like to return the favor.

I will sort things soon.

It does not change my searches. Must be a Brit thing.

Motel is a type of a hotel - near roads, short stay, as someone said 1-2 stories. There is no actual strict definition though.

plaster 06-12-2016 04:23 PM

Motels have bed bugs, hotels generally do not.

Whats the difference?...anywhere from $50 To $500 or more per night.

gnawledge 06-12-2016 04:46 PM

The way I was told when I was a kid and never assumed or was told otherwise is that: motel you have an outside entrance and hotel is inside access though a lobby.

As a Floridian that makes sense

so any cheap hotel is a motel?

iSpyCams 06-12-2016 04:55 PM

Motel = Motor Hotel, i.e. You drive up to your room. Usually cheaper, easier to get hookers, cadavers and other stuff in and out of your room while avoiding front desk scrutiny and prying eyes.

If I am not mistaken it is a marketing term coined in the glory days of route 66 and intended to offer a convenient place to sleep for motorists who just wanted to grab a few z's before hitting the road again.

lagwagon 06-12-2016 05:10 PM

motel - doors on the outside, hotel - doors on the inside

...and
if you want room service or breakfast in bed go to a hotel
if you need some one to carry your bags to your room go to a hotel

_Richard_ 06-13-2016 07:05 AM

Motels are generally drive-ins, with parking access to suite

bronco67 06-13-2016 07:30 AM

In a hotel, they actually try to clean the jizz stains.

DBS.US 06-13-2016 09:23 AM

Hotel has food services

Barry-xlovecam 06-13-2016 10:15 AM

Originally, a contraction for motorway hotel = motel designed for a travelers convince along the highway.

Bladewire 06-13-2016 10:27 AM

Motels have a communal ice machine with a bucket to scoop ice.

Hotels have a small fridge with ice making capabilities in each room.

Motel rooms smell like the last person who stayed there.

Hotels rooms only smell like the last person under the bed sheets.

Motels can have hourly rates. Hotels do not.

Motels have an A/C unit ( if you're lucky ) that you turn on yourself.

Hotels have automatic central heating and air.

Years of shooting in dives, in the beginning lol

exactly, like the British would say "inn".

We have premiere inns or travel lodge.

Hotels - food, bars, room, bed & all the other trimmings

B&B - bed & breakfast...

Motel or inn, a bed for the night, some now do break fast, but standard, no bars or restaurants.

Doors on the outside: Motel
Doors all together in a hallway inside one big building: Hotel

Usually. Sometimes chains like Motel 6 like to buy old hotel buildings and use those, making things all confusing. :upsidedow

exactly, it's not where the door is...

there's food & drink usually available in a hotel, a motel is just a bed for the night, like a British inn :2 cents:

ErectMedia 06-13-2016 05:29 PM

Hotel=Where ya take a high class escort.
Motel=Where ya take a skank cause she doesn't deserve any better. :2 cents:

dillonaire 06-13-2016 05:38 PM
