It's been like that since the 1950's. It's not really Constitutionally free, as there are at least still some Constitutionally protected rights in these zones, but not good enough IMHO. The ACLU has been fighting this for a long time.

Seems to me unless the border patrol is going to break down your door you have little to worry about.

I've seen these random border patrol checkpoints in SoCal. One time a van behind me in line let out a dozen Mexicans and they all ran off into the hills.

I live less than 100 miles from the USA -Canada border so I guess I am in that zone. It has never been a problem in this area that I am aware of.
