Is an Apple iWatch a good gift? (Serious Q - No poo involved :))

Looking for a nice surprise gift for my Sons 25th Birthday next month. He has an iPhone (Latest Model) which he is always using. He doesn't have a computer, so all his internet stuff takes place on his phone.

I'm not even 100% sure what (if any) the advantages of the iWatch are, so would getting him it be a nice accompaniment for his iPhone that he could get use from, or just an unnecessary accessory that doesn't really do much?

No apple haters please. Thats for another thread :) Thanks

cause you always seem cool I won't hate on apple (this one time cause I hate apple)..

But I'd go for a iPad before a iWatch but then again if he has no internet other than his phone that won't help. The iwatch and android watches don't do a lot of things really. I think they allow you to read a text without taking your iphone out of your pocket and other things for health if he is a jogger or such.

I'm sure he would love it but for me I own a Tag watch and I'd never wear a android or iwatch myself..

pretty sure first watch was a flop.. you are getting him the watch 2 that is about to come out?

Why not just call him and drop subtle hints to see if he even likes the iwatch. Say you got one as a gift or you used a friends and it was cool...see how he responds.

for the right person, sure...

As you already know I have Apple everything, Macs, an iPad, iPhone, Apple TVs etc

But my advice on the iWatch is to wait for an update to the next model.

I liken the iWatch to the original iPad (which had no camera etc). The original iWatch was Apple dipping it's toe in the water, I'd be disappointed if the next revision wasn't much better than the current offering.

If he doesn't wear a watch now, don't buy him one. Some people find them incredibly uncomfortable. If he's always wearing a watch then I'm sure he'd like an Apple watch.

I almost bought a Moto 360 second gen as it's one of the few that looks like a normal watch, then I stopped and thought, fuck that, I hate wearing watches.

Good for isheeps.
How about an actual watch (watch haters - it is not for time, it is jewelry style accessory).

Rochard 08-05-2016 08:56 AM

If he is an Apple guy most likely he'll love it.

The problem with the smart watch is we have such high expectations and watches are limited because they are small and have such a small screen.

For me smart watches don't work. I am picky about my watches - I want something thin on my wrist. This is why I wear mostly Skagen watches.

no shit.... if you want a thoughtful gift, get him a nice normal watch, and invest a bit more than few hundred bucks... he will use it for the next decade or 2 and will remember it as "the watch that my dad gave me for my 25th birthday"... instead of some useless gadget that he will replace in 6 months... iwatches and other gadgets are great for 12 year old kids, who are not mature enough to appreciate a thoughtful gift... :2 cents:

Thanks everyone. Some VERY good points raised. I think I'll find something else for his Birthday, and possibly look at the 2nd Gen that will be available near xmas :)

The few people I know who have them do some cool things with them (control a RED camera for instance) and really like the product. If he doesn't have one, I think it would be a cool gift.

Iwatch is basically an extension of the phone to make it easier to use for lazy fuckers that can't be bothered removing a phone from their pocket, basically a bluetooth headset on your arm......

If he is a big star trek fan he will love it.... if you want to get him something usedful buy him a book or Ipad

Just get him this IWear:

The current Apple watch has been around for a while now. September is when Apple tends to announce and release new gadgets new versions so if you want to really get him the latest and greatest, wait.

Or, just take him shopping. If he likes traditional non-electronic watches, that might be a better idea.

Personally if my father gave me a shitty iWatch I would set him on fire while he slept.

I hated my Apple Watch and gave it away after three weeks. I have iPad Air 2, iPad Pro, iPhone 6+, newest Macbook Pro, and a Macbook Air. Love those. Hate the Apple Watch.

Why buy him a watch at all? Get him a timepiece instead. Breitling Navitimer with a black dial, stainless case, and black leather strap is a nice choice and a timeless classic.
