Attackers can Hack Your Monitor - See & Modify Content on Screen

Just one of the scary things coming out of DEFCON ....

Quote:

We think of our monitors as passive entities. The computer sends them data, and they somehow?magically??turn it into pixels which make words and pictures.

But what if that wasn?t the case? What if hackers could hijack our monitors and turn them against us?

As it turns out, that?s possible. A group of researchers has found a way to hack directly into the tiny computer that controls your monitor without getting into your actual computer, and both see the pixels displayed on the monitor?effectively spying on you?and also manipulate the pixels to display different images.

?We can now hack the monitor and you shouldn?t have blind trust in those pixels coming out of your monitor,? And Cui, the lead researcher who come up with this ingenious hack, told me earlier this week.

I'm so scared :1orglaugh

Honestly, TV's are being sold right now that watch you, while you're watching TV, and send back data about you to be sold. No public outcry, that scares me.

Yep, the four Samsung LED TV's in the house all have the ability to capture voice data and transmit it back to wherever they send it. Fortunately it's easy to block if you know how, but it does come switched on by default and nobody switches it off, let alone blocks it.

I think of all those dystopian Sci Fi films where everything you do is monitored all of the time and when you look around you, almost everything you own now can be used for data collection. Your smart phone, smart tv, smart refrigerator, computer, VoIP phone etc etc.

So all those old Sci Fi films have come true and we are indeed being treated like rats in a cage.

Yeah it's creepy & should be illegal.

Don't forget the 10 million Visio TV's sold that track you & mesh other info connecting your IP to market you online & on your phone.

Most people don't know Visio TV's do that :disgust

Screen reading tech has been around for 20 years. There's a
secret program name for it. You are way late on this.

Yea you can find evidence of monitor hijacks going as far back as windows 98, this is not new but it's just getting easier because there are more unsecured networks than ever before.

I hope that this is some sort of irony.

1. Samsung lied -- its smart TV is indeed spying on you and it is doing nothing to stop that

Yep, you can bet on that... :upsidedow

Use Google to figure out more about it. Oh, did I say Google?! :2 cents:

Read the article, this is not simply screen reading.

It's been possible to detect what is displayed on a CRT monitor for many years. Back then monitors did not control the display of data using microprocessors within the monitor, they do now and the article refers to contents being read AND modified without any intrusion into the computer at all.

Read above, this is very different and does not involve exploiting the computer at all.

So the monitor firmware has been hacked?

A solution as simple as, "the host computer has requested a firmware update, press MENU to authorise this" would have been too much work... get the product to market...

Please make a General DEFCON thread. This was interesting. Thanks.
