What's the best piece of advice you've been given & gave out?

Happy Monday everyone...and since we all know we're not getting real work done let's shoot the shit...

So. What's the best piece of advice you've gotten?

When I was bring moody and wistfully staring into nothingness after my 1st real breakup:

"What are you looking like that for? Cheer up, life isn't that bad!" - Random neighbour lady on the bus :1orglaugh I know it's simple and kind of dumb but anytime I'm having serious anxiety about anything I always think back to that moment & somehow I feel better :)

My advice that I like to offer to others: Hustle Hard. Live well. Do good. :2 cents:

You?

Mine is A-class boring but it has worked well for me:

(1) Never borrow money.
(2) Never lend money.
(3) Live within your means.
(4) Travel & see the world.

Number (4) is the most crucial because it's the best education most people will get and it's the only way you can learn about the country you live in. In other words, you cannot really compare the taste of an apple with a banana unless you have eaten both. I think people will universally accept this as a basic truth.

Well it also applies to traveling to other countries and learning about other cultures. Way too many GFY people, especially from the USA, know less about their home country than I do (and I've usually spent less time in their home country than they have).

It's also probably the best I advice I can offer to GFY people because in doing so, you will discover a lot about yourself and about what exactly you like and want from life. However, you also learn about what life has to offer because you are basically seeing a wider selection of options.

The best bit of advice I have ever been given was from a gunnery sergeant in the United States Marine Corps. He told me to take a small percentage of my income every month and put it into savings. He told me to make this automatic so you never even notice the money missing. From there he told me once a year to take that money and invest it into something stable.

And this is exactly what I did.

I won't have any concerns when I retire.

Good advice, only don't wait a full year with it in savings, it's too tempting to dip into it and replenish it later and also you miss out a little bit in positive returns by not getting in asap if you are going to anyway. Invest often for a long time and retirement will take care of itself.

Typical reply from a know it all. You might have memorized some shit about the USA but you certainly know nothing about being an American so STFU

Travelling has taught me that people all over the world are assholes. Some are just louder than others.

Best advice I ever got was don't trust anyone. Thank you Grandma :thumbsup

I don't know, harder and smarter sounds good.

Dogging Don from Killergram once advised Gary on a skype chat to do one thing, keep rolling the camera.

Since then, we filmed most meetings, most fun, and always have the camera close to hand, now with loads of film, we can update my new site daily and won't run out for years! Was good advice :thumbsup

In fact, I was thinking specifically about losers like you who need to get out of your trailer once in a while. Stay in your small, sad world by all means but there is a wealth of opportunity out there and its economic as much as about broadening one's horizons. And like you're well traveled? Dont make me laugh, you miserable loser...

I thought of the famous expression from Rudyard Kipling:

"And what should they know of England who only England know?"

What can he know of England who only England knows?

"If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don?t deal in lies,
Or being hated, don?t give way to hating,
And yet don?t look too good, nor talk too wise:

Spieglergirls 08-31-2016 11:14 PM

Give thy thoughts no tongue,
Nor any unproportioned thought his act.
Be thou familiar, but by no means vulgar.
Those friends thou hast, and their adoption tried,
Grapple them to thy soul with hoops of steel;
But do not dull thy palm with entertainment
Of each new-hatch'd, unfledged comrade. Beware
Of entrance to a quarrel, but being in,
Bear't that the opposed may beware of thee.
Give every man thy ear, but few thy voice;
Take each man's censure, but reserve thy judgment.
Costly thy habit as thy purse can buy,
But not express'd in fancy; rich, not gaudy;
For the apparel oft proclaims the man,
Neither a borrower nor a lender be;
For loan oft loses both itself and friend,
And borrowing dulls the edge of husbandry.
This above all: to thine ownself be true,
And it must follow, as the night the day,
Thou canst not then be false to any man.

Here's a bit of free advice.

Work to live a nice life.

Don't work so hard you fuck up your life.

Invest what money you have left for a rainy day.

I have met so many who worked so hard they fucked up their lives. Bought more than they could afford and worshipped the Green.

Then ended up poor and broken.

I do both. I'm sick and tired of the devious methods to make money in adult and would rather just do mainstream.

The world is a fiery kiln of pragmatism...where rules are publically observed but privately trashed if there's any chance of getting an edge.

In love, life & sport - if someone else has that edge...you better damn well find a way to get it, too.
