North Korea Has Executed a Deputy Premier for dozing off
 

SEOUL, South Korea - The North Korean leader, Kim Jong-un, has executed his deputy premier for education and purged two other senior officials, sending them to re-education camps, the South Korean government said on Wednesday.

Jeong Joon-hee, a spokesman for the South's Unification Ministry, said at a news briefing that the South Korean government had used various means to confirm the execution of Kim Yong-jin, the deputy premier, and the purge of Kim Yong-chol, the head of the United Front Department of the ruling Workers' Party, which handles relations with, as well as spying operations against, South Korea. Choe Hui, a deputy chief of the party's Propaganda and Agitation Department, was also banished for re-education, Mr. Jeong said.

Mr. Jeong provided no further details, including when the reported punishments were believed to have taken place or how South Korea had learned of them. But in a later briefing, a senior Unification Ministry official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss intelligence matters, said that Kim Jong-un had found fault with the 63-year-old deputy premier's "disrespectful posture" during a meeting that Mr. Kim oversaw in late June.

A subsequent investigation found the deputy premier to be an "anti-party reactionary" guilty of "modern-day factionalism," and he was executed by firing squad in July, the official said.

I don't keep up too much with NK politics except for the headlines, but it seems to me that Kim Jong-un seems much worse than his father but I don't know...

When I worked at Playboy we had two older guys that ran our IT department and they had their own little office.... They were both big boys.... And I knew that 2:30 I had to go down to their office and wake them up. It was comical every time.

That sounds like a probable act of mercy directed at putting him out of pain and misery quickly. Literally blasting him away.

There are clips of US military rifle firing squad (""death by musketry") executions online, showing the end of the road for various German military convicted of war crimes/crimes against humanity by one or another special military tribunals during our occupation. They show a relatively slow and torturous death - it's seconds before the executee even reacts, then slowly sinking on the post he is tied to, bending his knees. Not instantaneous or anything close to it. It takes awhile to bleed to death, and quite a while of consciousness if nothing vital was hit. The face is masked - out of concern for the reaction of the firing squad itself and anyone else witnessing. Even with the mask, it's grotesque.

For the record, I hate capital punishment under any circumstances, no exceptions. But when compared to traditional, historical US protocols, hanging, the electric chair, firing squad, and most tragically, the gas chamber, the use of an anti-aircraft cannon probably beats all of them in speed and mercy.
