What is the longest trip you have made? Do you recommend very long trips?

I have the chance to do a 2 1/2 months trip in other country, but I am a little bit scary of homesickness and being a complete stranger for such a long time. Should I do it?

TheDynasty 09-26-2016 09:52 PM

Which country?

kane 09-26-2016 10:26 PM

I've taken a few 90 day trips to places. Basically, I just moved for 3 months to the place I wanted to check out. I had a little home sickness, but with Skype, phone, text, Facebook etc. it wasn't too bad.

Go. Make friends. Quickest cure to home-sickness.
Pick a bar
Pick a restaurant.
Pick a shopping area/coffee shop.

Exactly! Been away from home for like two years now as well, but thanks to the technology nowadays that makes things a little bit better :thumbsup

Ask your mother if she wants to join and can hold your hand?
Hundreds of thousands backpack around the globe every year, starting at 18 years old.

Travelling for 5 years now, somewhere here, there, anywhere.

Coming up on 3 years in Malaysia. I'll be headed back to NYC next year - but I'll wait until Winter is over.

I spent three months in Bali. 2 months in Peru. Many many months in Mexico. All on the dime of my employer at the time.

How was Bali? I hear the bali that people expect to see and the bali that they end up seeing are very very different.

Was there 2 times, developping rapidly. Was there first short after the bombings. 5 years later the tourist where back. Bali is 100% aimed for tourism. But there are nice more traditional places. Than you must avoid Kuta and stay in other parts. Lombok is also more traditional. I went to Bali two times for 6 weeks and stayed in a few villages for a week like Ubud, Lovina, Amed, Gili Islands, Sanur. I had perfect bungalows with view over the rice fields for 4 USD per night (must be more now).

People that book a complete holiday package will mostly end in Kuta. Their fault that they don't like it, is crazy dirty city. Most tourist stay in hotel and expect sightseeing trips 30 minutes from the hotel and expect to see 'the real indonesia" and return to their pool. And a lot can't deal with the fact that everyone tries to sell you something.

What did the people book, all inn for 2 weeks? Family hotel? Or going around and rent nice private beach view villa's for 600 USD per month...

I am planning to go there again next year for 3 months. I like the food and atmospehere.

Bali is my fav place I have ever been. I went in 2013 on my honeymoon, couldn't recommend it highly enough. What you have to realize about it is that it's like every other place on Earth, there is amazing spots, there is shit holes, once you get that out of your system you can just get down to enjoying it.

I stayed in Seminyak but also travelled on day trips to a few other places. Some beaches are messy, it's life, don't go to it, for every shit beach there is 5 great beaches. Seminyak in particular has great beaches and is rammed with some of the best beach clubs around Asia. My wife and I went to a different one every night. Food in Bali is cheap as hell and delicious. Alcohol is expensive, think $75 for a 750ml bottle of Absolut from the supermarket. You hire a driver for a full day (10 hours) and its $60 USD plus throw the guy $5-10 USD tip as a thanks. He will take you anywhere you want and make sure you are safe and having a great time. He can translate for you, take you to some local spots that you might not see otherwise, all kinds of cool shit. Hotels are on the more expensive side in the more touristy places and they are always booked far in advance. There is a lot of Aussies in Bali, they are loud and get pretty drunk but they are harmless most of the time and just out for a fun night.

All in all, you will get people who are just negative about any Country because the highly photoshopped photos they saw online do not match the reality in some cases, that's on them for going in with higher than normal expectations. I like to think I am an experienced traveller, I would go to most places and I never expect too much, I let the place I go to show me the truth.

Stay out of kuta and you're fine. Loved Bali myself but liked Lombok better. Less tourists more local

If you have the chance to GO. It'll be one of the best decisions you'll ever make. Otherwise, you might end up regretting not taking any risks when you're old and feeble and unable to take advatnate of your youth any longer :2 cents:

Olga BongaCash 09-30-2016 09:31 AM

I would not mind now from a long journey... That's cool!

2 weeks is enough for me, home is home. Can't understand traitors who do years or even permanent leave. Couple months - ok, I guess.

Just reading some travel blogger - worst trip of his life, he is always repeating how shocked he is that people call it "paradise" etc. Simple examples as scams, all tourists will be ripped off if they rent motorbikes etc (renters, of course, do not warn people about that). Etc etc. Everyone is trying to rip you off, if you negotiate more seriously they can simply say "fuck off", then unofficial "ticketing" near temples etc etc, scamming that "you must go with a guide" etc etc.
Also - how they deliberately do not have public transport and rip of tourists with ridiculously high (usually higher than even western prices) taxi fares...
He has been to lots of Asian countries and loved it and he is shocked why would anyone go to Bali. Or Indonesia for that matter.
