Portland Oregon Offering Free College Tuition

News coming out today that here in Oregon Portland State University will be offering free tuition for 4 years. To qualify you have to have maintained a 3.4 GPA in high school and qualify for the Federal Pell Grant Program.

Looks like Bernie has caused some change. We'll see how this plays out.

Sly 10-04-2016 02:51 PM

Bring on the easy classes for 3.4...

We have a shortage of doctors. Not communication majors.

brassmonkey 10-04-2016 02:55 PM

pell grants are for low income

Horatio Caine 10-04-2016 02:56 PM

Yes, we need 1000 more useless sociology and 18th century literature majors on over saturated job market.

Judging from replies sounds like a libby university.

It's Portland. We keep it weird and very liberal here. That said, the number of people accepted into the college will not be increasing so there won't be any more liberal arts majors than there already are.

In other news... Oregon Portland State University will now have a budget problem, tuition going up 20% for everyone else in 2017... :1orglaugh

There has been no word on how they plan to pay for this yet, this is a very real possibility.

well they need to fill the gaps. college forces people to change paths because of income.

so if "the number of people accepted into the college will not be increasing"... doesn't that mean that some people who were previously qualified, willing to pay, and able to afford to go there, will be unable to attend now (for lack of available spots)? How is that desirable in any way?

It creates warm fuzzies for administrators too afraid to bust their ass to create something difficult and real.

Hillary said she would pay for it all, out of her own filthy pocket.

As far as I understand the application and acceptance policy will not change. So they accept people as they normally would then they look at their grades and finances to see if they qualify. The more I read about it the more it looks like they aren't really giving that much away. A person will still have to pay for room and board if they live on campus and it gives them no transportation or living expenses. Annual tuition and fees runs around $8,500 per year. Pell Grant would pay $5,800 and there is a program called Oregon Promise that would pay an additional $2,200. So if they qualify for Pell Grant they likely would have gotten free tuition anyway. So it looks like the actual number of people this will help is pretty small, a person would have to qualify for Pell Grant, but not Oregon Promise in order to benefit from it.

It refers to the parents.

If you are a kid looking to get a break on college but your parents make good bank, you are SOL. Always thought that was bizarre.

I think you are confused about what "leftist way" is... leftist way is giving one group of people free tuition, while raising tuition by 20% (or whatever) for everyone else... as a result, nothing positive gets accomplished, except one group of people gets a freebie at the expense of the other group... and you guys call it "progress"... :helpme :error

"rightist way" on the other hand, is more or less the status quo... if you have a desire to invest in your education, you invest your own money, you don't look for some sucker to pay for it...

You mean like Trump.. he gets to make money and bitch and complain but doesn't have to pay any taxes. 1 guy gets a free ride while everyone else pays for it..

I see where you are going with this...

Trump (alleged) not paying taxes has nothing to do with leftism or rightism, it has to do with a person (by cheating or by loophole or by whatever) personally choosing not to pay taxes (whether said tax was introduced by leftist or rightist is irrelevant).
