Obama wants to send you to Mars by 2030

President Obama Declares Mission to Mars

"The president said the ultimate goal is to make it possible to one day remain on Mars for an extended period of time.

"Getting to Mars will require continued cooperation between government and private innovators, and we're already well on our way. Within the next two years, private companies will for the first time send astronauts to the International Space Station," Obama wrote.

He continued, "The next step is to reach beyond the bounds of Earth's orbit. I'm excited to announce that we are working with our commercial partners to build new habitats that can sustain and transport astronauts on long-duration missions in deep space. These missions will teach us how humans can live far from Earth -- something we'll need for the long journey to Mars."

Who wants to bet one of these innovators will def. include Elon Musk? There's been a lot of talk lately regarding Mars and missions etc but what do you think the chances of this happening in our lifetime are? I think 2030 is way too ambitious myself.

Perhaps Putin will announce how he will conquer Mars by 2020, so that could trigger space race as it was in 60's :D

Sly 10-12-2016 09:19 AM

Private is already running with this.

Government needs something better. Something bigger. Something huge. We need another real mission to bring us together once again.

We can only hope so.

Rochard 10-12-2016 10:53 AM

Why have't we settled on the moon yet? It's much closer, much easier, and we'll most likely need that as a base to get to Mars.

Let's do it.

Won't happen, since nobody's really interested in that nowadays. As about the US Mars mission... They should find out how to bring humans to the Earth's orbit first, because the Russian space technologies is the only possibility for their astronauts to get into the outer space. Even Curiosity was sent to Mars by Russian rocket engines :1orglaugh

Perhaps it's because we have yet to actually land there. :pimp

I've wondered that myself. I think maybe it was because there was not much reason to do it before. They just recently found water on the Moon. If they can find enough of it and have a cheap way of getting it, this would make a huge difference.

I think the best way to get to mars is to make it a multi-country effort in conjunction with private enterprise. Everyone can benefit from the resource rights and science rights, and spreading the responsibilities out reduces the costs, the risks, and development time.

Today I saw a video of someone flying a new jetpack, being followed by a drone, relaying live video and GPS information, on my tablet. And now we're talking about going to Mars within 15 years. The future is now, and I fucking love it.

I think some kind of a station on the moon is being discussed.

O'rly? Now go tell me about American space technologies. I'm not that conspiracy theory loving guy - course the US citizens were to the Moon, as well as Russian dogs Belka and Strelka were to the outer space. It doesn't mean that Russian dogs have built the first space rockets and that the US guys have some relation to the Moon program. It was a Nazi German project. The Nazis have designed everything, and they just used your money and your citizens like a cannon fodder. They were owning those technologies - not you. There is no Wernher Von Braun anymore and there is no way for the States to be on the Moon again. You were used in German Nazi technologies then but now you have to buy the Russian ones... because Von Braun is dead.

Getting people to Mars and back safely is at the moment beyond our ability. With the troubles on terra firma, it's also a waste of money.
