Are you looking for your daily dose of drama?

Wow...I'm glad to see that a bunch of little girls are having really heavy periods this month! I was talking to one of the users beta testing StatsFree, the 100% free adult affiliate revenue tracker, and he asked if I owned statsfree.com.

Nah, I'm runing an opensource, free project to help the community and that's only going to get better with community support. Hah, I guess StatsRemote considars StatsFree a HUGE threat, cause yah...they recently registered it at a pathetic attempt to gain traffic from a name that's not theirs, doesn't describe their product, is blatently misleading, and...I don't even know what else to say/think. I cannot wait to release StatsFree 1.0 to the world, you'll all love the outrageous monthly cost of $0.00.

I guess it's easy to understand when you're offering a better product, that's why statsremote got the .com domain! :321GFY

I`m beta testing the program and is working really good , and best is that it is a FREE one !

You will love StatsFree :winkwink:

There's this funny thing called business that you might want to look into. Of course they're going to register that name, for the same reason that you keep mentioning them in your threads.

You obviously have issues with them offering Stats Remote at a price, so you're offering yours free and making a big deal out of theirs in your posts about your own. How is that any less pathetic than them registering a domain name?

JustinG 04-04-2003 11:05 AM

Yeah, you're right...I'm misleading people by spamming their name everywhere possible. I just started making doorway pages that mimick theres so I can trick users into thinking they have to pay for StatsFree. I just registered gofuckyurself.com too so people that accidentally type in the wrong addy go to my page.

The hell kind of "business" logic is that?!

It's the logic of reality. You have threatened their livelihood since the get-go when you announced "Free Alternative to Stats Remote" and now you're making a big deal because they registered a domain name that you didn't bother to register first.

I'm looking forward to trying out your code, but really is it that hard to understand the position of Stats Remote? Yours even looks like theirs. I can totally see where they're coming from, and I think it's actually you who feels threatened or you wouldn't give a shit what they do.

Just my thoughts.

JustinG 04-04-2003 11:37 AM

I don't feel threatenend one bit. I'm actually quite amused that they do feel threatened because of their posts on XBiz telling me others have tried and all failed. I guess since I'm going to sooo miserably fail, they're just taking precautions. I'm not taking precautions with the domain, because I don't really see a need to. However, I don't find it amusing that they're attempting to profit off my name.

I understand their position and logic completly. Do I agree with it? Would I do it? Never.

Once you get your hands on a copy, please feel free to hit me up on ICQ or e-mail and let me know what you think!

OK well I admit I haven't seen any posts about this other than here at GFY, so maybe I missed some of the drama that led up to your reaction. If that's the case I apologize. I don't use Stats Remote, I'm just calling things as they appear to me in this forum.

I look forward to checking out your stuff.

chupacabra 04-04-2003 12:21 PM

have someone hijack that shit, Justin... who's the initial registar..?

<IMX> 04-04-2003 12:31 PM

I understand your pain, however; it is a minor annoyance...if you have a free high quality product, they are not going to be able to compete with a paid version of a similar quality.

That is that. Since they grabbed your name, that seems to be a clear signal your product is fucking UP TO SNUFF.

So, consider it a BIG compliment.

flashfreak 04-04-2003 12:39 PM

I'm sure it's not so hard to change its name....you can still find dozens of good domain for your site :Graucho

Jak 04-04-2003 01:10 PM

OK well I just went and found the thread at X-Biz. For those looking for it I won't post the URL here but the thread title is Oh CECash is gonna hate me!

You started off the thread with this:
Quote:

We've all heard of StatsRemote and seen it promoted by every TGP owner, webmaster resource site, and even a few different affiliates promote it. It's "soo amazing" because it fakes a few HTTP requests, parses up the results, and puts it in a pretty lil' blue window.
Were you not expecting a response? The goal behind the Open Source movement is not to put other companies out of business but rather to offer free alternatives for those who want them. Your whole thread there reads more like an attack than a friendly notice of an alternative, so it's no wonder that the Stats Remote people are going to have a response to it.

You should read up on Open Source a bit more, especially since you also go on to say:
Quote:

If I were to release the sourcecode for StatsFree, I would release it only to those people who agreed to the terms of the license. You agree to terms of software licenses everytime you install something and have to check 'I Agree'. Instead of using some long drawn out license, I use one that was built and put together by the opensource/linux community called GPL, or the General Public License. All it does is say that anyone can modify the source code, but they can't take credit for the code, [i]nor can they can ever try to profit off the code or the modifications they make.[i]
That's not how a GPL works. See here for more details: http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/selling.html

Open Source is indeed an awesome thing, but don't taint the spirit by attacking the very people that you state clearly inspired you to write your own "clone" (your words) of their "cool" (again your own words) software.

J B 04-04-2003 04:06 PM

If you think we consider statsfree as a threat think again. As I told you in the XBiz thread... if you want to be the Robin Hood of the adult industry, go ahead...

The thing that's really funny here is that the guy that copies another company's idea as blatantly as you do complains about that we register a domain. We own thousands of domains, so one more or less doesn't matter :)

What do you have to say about this?

So, who's pathetic here?

Thats weak man. A stats program with stats as a logo. 2 tables showing stats. Oh no! I have never looked at either program but if I were going to make a stats program a table with that info would come to my mind first. It looks just the stats I see everyday for the programs I use. Find a better arguement.

jas1552 04-04-2003 06:54 PM

I don't get it. Why give this stuff away for free? Do you just not like the Stats Remote people? Is it to advertise your skills maybe? Why not sell it for half of whatever Stats Remote costs?

Have you never heard of the concept of opensource?

Why do you think apache is "free"?

Yes, I've heard of opensource. I'm no programmer or anything. I guess I was just asking what's the point of open source for the programmer that gets nothing out of it.

Edit: is it just a philosophical thing?

JustinG 04-04-2003 07:02 PM

Hey hey JB, long time no see!

Your right it doesn't matter that you registered it. People that type in statsfree.com and realize that free means a monthly fee, I would hope get the clue that it's not what they were looking for. If not, more power to you!

The logo you say...See, I use this program called PostNuke to power the StatsFree website, and it wanted an image for the news section. I was inclined to go to this little thing called Google Images, and searched for 'free clip art stats'...you'll never believe that's what popped up. Oh, the wonders of the world! Statistics are generally...wait, someone correct me if I'm wrong here...plotted on a graph? I think that's it. Yeah, yeah it is.

And as I said the XBiz thread, I think StatsRemote has an awesome color scheme. Then, once I realized how much interest there was in it, I pulled it down to refine things and give it it's own feel. Seeing as your not one of the beta testers, nor have your taken the time to look at the new screen shots posted on other forums, you have no clue what your talking about!

It wasn't a friendly notice of an alternative. I would love for you to tell me where someone said it was supposed to be a friendly notice. If I don't agree with something, I have no qualms posting exactly how I feel. It may not be friendly, but hey, looks like thats the theme! Remember...I'm Robin Hood. :1orglaugh

Did you take the time to read the rest of my "own words"? I stood corrected then and changed my stance on how the licensing would be handled. Open Source projects generally are clones of commercial applications. I sware StarOffice is exactly like Microsoft Office, Gaim is a clone of AOL's IM Software, eMule is a direct attack on eDonkey's ad-based software. I don't know what "people" you're refering to that inspired me, but I'll pick thoe examples. Feel free to check out Freshmeat.net or SourceForge.net for plenty of other examples.

A mod on XBiz, Telecatz, sums it up pretty well:

Quote:

in all fairness to justing..I'm the one who brought the 'robin hood' comparison. I have no prob in (you guys) making some dough with your proggy..my argument was that if someone else (justing) was going to be offering a similiar program it should be for free if not less money ..or to not say anything negative about a program that he was also going to be profiting from..I'm assuming your affiliated with 'stats remote' with this proper introduction you made ?
Oh, and that "proper introduction"? There were plenty from JB:

Quote:

BTW Justin is not the first one that comes up with a free stats checking script. It happened before and it will happen again.

When we started the beta testing of StatsRemote last year in February people said that webmasters would not be willing to pay a monthly fee for it. When we released it to the public last year in May many people said the same. They also said that it wouldn't take long until a free software/script would be released.

Well, one year later there's still no sign of any real competition and even if there was I wouldn't worry too much about it. We have a strong member base and many of our members would be willing to pay more than $30 a month.
Well shit, you sure must have plenty of free time to worry about "fake" competition like StatsFree. What this gets down to, and is in the original XBiz thread, is that I don't feel $30 is a cost that I'm willing to pay when I can write my own. I got challenged, called Robin Hood, mocked for starting the thread...and all by JB from StatsRemote. What happened, you just motivated me to do a better job.

I didn't go into this with intentions of attacking StatsRemote, which I could sware I've said 10 times. It got relased as something I personally used and thought others would benfit from. It DOESN'T support 400+ sponsors, you can't call a phone number for support, and there aren't any statiscal formulas to help you guesstimate your earnings. Want those? Go to statsfree.com - hah!

From your cell phone, system tray bar, or through the native window you can get your stats for fre. For the time being, I'm going to refrain from posting all the new features that will be in 1.0. All of the beta testers have full permission to post screenshots, and they all know (and laughed) at whats going on.

Cheers-
JustinG
