Texas is arresting & jailing voters wearing clothing with political statements

Do you think this should be legal?

A Donald Trump supporter wearing a ?Deplorables? T-shirt and a ?Make America Great Again? hat was arrested last week at a Texas polling place.

Brett Bartlett Mauthe, 55, removed his hat as he attempted to vote in Bulverde, Texas, roughly 25 miles north of San Antonio, per the San Antonio News Express-News. However, he refused to remove or cover up his shirt, which said ?Basket of Deplorables,? a reference to a comment Hillary Clinton made about some of Trump?s supporters.

That led to his arrest on charges of electioneering and loitering near a polling place, according to the Herald-Zeitung newspaper.

I can't speak for Texas, but a similar law has been on the books in Indiana for a long time.

TampaToker 11-01-2016 10:43 AM

Yeah lock him up if he violated law....

I can see why - we don't need supporters from one side going after the other side because someone wore a damn t-shirt.

My house is at the entrance of our small housing development, and during the last election California voted on gay marriage. Although it's illegal to put such signs up on properly that isn't yours (in this case it was owned by the HOA), both sides put signs up where you enter / leave the development. They did this in multiple locations. They started at 3am on election day and by 7am the cops were called multiple times because they were physically fighting. Pretty silly really.

I voted weeks ago via mail.

Based on your story I can understand it a bit more now. Something about the clothes you wear getting you jailed rubbed me the wrong way, but if you couple it with loitering/voter intimidation, then it makes sense.

Careful bladewire, Rochard will block you.

The reason he was arrested is in the article: Because he broke the law.

ELECTION CODE CHAPTER 61. CONDUCT OF VOTING GENERALLY

There are similar laws here in Canada. One time my Mother who was 82 at the time, was wearing a Poppy, and tried to vote. They gave her a hard time about it until she threatened to tell a TV News Crew. They let her vote.

If he was just there to vote and leave then no. you should be able to wear whatever the hell you want.

If he was there causing a scene and campaigning for Trump at the polling place, then I'm ok with him being removed.

The article is kinda light on details about what exactly happened.

You cannot campaign at a polling station anywhere that I know of. Wearing the shirt is campaigning

Baddog said it perfectly. Wearing such clothes is considered campaigning, and campaigning is not allowed at polling stations.

In some areas politics are dominated by one political party or another. Imagine walking up to your polling booth and you see dozens of people running the polling station wearing political shirts for the other party. Some people might be intimidated by this.

Yeah that would suck, like you're being pressured by strangers to vote a certain way.

I thought I live in a non politically free country. I was so wrong...

So long as it applies to all sides, fine.
