I mainly disable comments, but there are some sites that I have enabled it on, but I use spamshield so do not get any spam comments now.

comments are off i don't run support. no reason to have it on here

We used to have comments off and many sites we have still do not use them. We've been testing sites with comments enabled. Some get real comments which are valuable interactions with traffic.

I think we are testing 3 or 4 no spam plug ins as well along with spamshield.

Yes, it depends on the sites (niche, et cetera). The biggest sites tend to get more comments, I use spamshield on them and so far do not get too many spam comments.
