How the fuck do I set up skype ID?

Registered with email, no chance to pick up skype ID, email is used for that.

Then I read "when you register with email you only get microsoft account, go register with the phone".

So registered with the phone number, again - no prompt to choose skype ID, you get your phone number as skype ID.

WTF?

How do I get normal skype ID that I can choose? :helpme

I was creating it from within skype application that I have downloaded already. So looks like you need to be creating it from the site. However it does not make any sense why would they not let you pick username from application. As if people are happy to be using emails or phone numbers as their IDs... :error

And the problem is that I burned my email and phone number on those accounts and could probably not use them to verify the one I will create with my desired ID.

Fuckers.

Demetri BongaCash 12-06-2016 09:57 AM

oh right, have the same thing  I'm still trying to process this.

Welcome to the internet

You can't make a stand alone id anymore .

You must use Phone # or Email to create Id's now.

LetterTwenty7 12-06-2016 05:06 PM

it's happened to me too a couple of months ago when I was creating a support account, so I just left it like that. What can you do.

This is news to me because I am yet to be contacted by anyone who has phone number or email as their skype ID...

Are you 100% sure?

I made an assumption this happens only when you create from within already downloaded skype application interface. And all should be good when creating from the website (as there are much more info fields to fill, as per currently sober's video).

I really think that this is not true. One of the uploaders who works for me has just registered a new Skype account 2 weeks ago, and his ID doesn't contain email nor phone... That will suck if they drop skype names.

JohnnyNight 12-07-2016 07:48 AM

Yeah, this happened to me too..

Hadn't used skype for awhile and couldn't get my original user friendly ID account back..

They had me send them 3 or 4 identity verification forms to confirm my identity and they kept telling me they weren't sure I was who I said I was..

Offered to send them passport / drivers license.. anything but it just kept going around in circles trying to prove my identity..

Had a better chance of taking a jar of salad dressing on a plane than proving anything to skype..

So just gave up for now and my new ID is something crazy like - live:545666fdt24

Not an especially catchy name..

How come? Does not look like a phone number. If we agree that it is either phone, or email.

TeenCat 12-07-2016 10:05 AM

you must be connected to the internet :2 cents:

JohnnyNight 12-07-2016 11:01 AM

Yeah, not just a phone number or email...

I got that ID because I ended up signing up for a new account through my Microsoft account...

And it all got so confusing I didn't even realize that's what happened..

I thought I was signing up for an email account name, but because my email address is the email address I use for my Microsoft account they gave me a Microsoft skype name..

The - live:typename - is what you get when you sign through your Microsoft account and didn't even know that's what I was doing...

I actually thought I had an email address name, but I didn't...

I really never did skype much, and didn't know how it goes..

Actually the only way I was able to find out my new skype name was to skype someone and they told me what came up...

LOL...

mineistaken 12-07-2016 06:23 PM

How can I select/change my Skype Name?

In September 2016 we have changed the way that you create a new account to use with Skype. This means that you can create a new account using either an email address or a phone number. This is the information you hand out when you want to be found and added on Skype. For all intents and purposes this will now be your Skype account name.

MFCT 12-08-2016 12:05 AM

Fuck Skype.

For text chat/voice calls/video calls, get an XMPP client like Pidgin or Gajim. Then go to https://xmpp.net/directory.php and choose a server. Then make an account on your chosen server by deciding on a username and a password.

That's it. You're all set.

No phone number needed, no e-mail needed, no scanned photo id needed, no credit card needed, no Paxim/Payoneer/Paypal needed, no bank account needed, no fingerprint sample needed, no hair sample needed, no DNA sample needed, no retinal scan needed, no dental records needed.

Plus, its all free.

What the fuck

romeo22 12-09-2016 12:43 AM

I would gladly sale one to you

Matyko 12-09-2016 01:16 AM

Been there done that - it is a struggle.. and speaking about Skype in general too... The android app, which can't properly sync with the desktop chat... I have Skype installed on 3 machines, one of them is able to sign in automatically after bootup, the other two needs manual log in all the time.. But at least it works well, you can search the logs well, etc..

NatalieK 12-09-2016 02:54 AM

skype's the tits when you get it sorted :thumbsup

Just wanted to bump this thread with new video call software I've discovered, free, open-source, called Ring.

https://ring.cx/en

Its available for Mac, Windows, Android, Linux. It doesn't need an account on a remote server. Its completely decentralized. You make a password, it generates a key. You give this key to whoever you want to video call, and you're video calling seconds later.

On Linux, my platform of choice, things like video calls can be difficult and frustrating to actually get to function, even using software that's supposed to make it easy. With Ring, I've never seen something like this just work perfectly right out of the box, seconds after an install. Perfectly clear audio. Perfectly clear video. No dropouts.

So if they've aced something like this on Linux, I can only imagine it works as good or better on other platforms.
