i always found the nuclear umbrella argument to be flimsy. the enemy of today is not nuclear hungry soviets. russia/china, is not going to attack us, or try to rule us. the only existential threat are islamic terrorists. they are not deterred by nuclear umbrella dogma. not even close.

The US has about 7k nukes plus the same for Russia plus China and others - Enough to end life as we know it - Why do anything, we have enough for M.A.D.?..

In 80x Russia and the USA had over 20 thousands nukes each. So I don't see a reason to worry about.

We cannot sell the old model bombs on ebay.
So, we have the additional expense of decommissioning old nukes and the dangers of the makings of a dirty weapon for terrorists getting into the wild.

Sounds like a plan for new jobs making expensive munitions that will never be used.

Actually it would put 10s of thousands of workers out of work in the US...currently all of the production plants in the US are in some stage of decommissioning and employ a ton of people...it would take many years to turn those plants around to production again and cause that whole industry of decommissioning to go out of business.
The construction industry would pick up a little slack but it takes a lot less workers to build a plant than to take one down

But how about Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty?
