United States releases information about Russian hacking

Interesting reading:

The U.S. Government confirms that two different RIS actors participated in the intrusion into a U.S. political party. The first actor group, known as Advanced Persistent Threat (APT) 29,entered into the party?s systems in summer 2015, while the second, known as APT28, entered in spring 2016.

Both groups have historically targeted government organizations, think tanks, universities, and corporations around the world. APT29 has been observed crafting targeted spearphishing campaigns leveraging web links to a malicious dropper; once executed, the code delivers Remote Access Tools (RATs) and evades detection using a range of techniques. APT28 is known for leveraging domains that closely mimic those of targeted organizations and tricking potential victims into entering legitimate credentials. APT28 actors relied heavily on shortened URLs in their spearphishing email campaigns. Once APT28 and APT29 have access to victims, both groups exfiltrate and analyze information to gain intelligence value. These groups use this information to craft highly targeted spearphishing campaigns. These actors set up operational infrastructure to obfuscate their source infrastructure, host domains and malware for targeting organizations, establish command and control nodes, and harvest credentials and other valuable information from their targets.

In summer 2015, an APT29 spearphishing campaign directed emails containing a malicious link to over 1,000 recipients, including multiple U.S. Government victims. APT29 used legitimate domains, to include domains associated with U.S. organizations and educational institutions, to host malware and send spearphishing emails. In the course of that campaign, APT29 successfully compromised a U.S. political party. At least one targeted individual activated links to malware hosted on operational infrastructure of opened attachments containing malware. APT29 delivered malware to the political party?s systems, established persistence, escalated privileges, enumerated active directory accounts, and exfiltrated email from several accounts through encrypted connections back through operational infrastructure. In spring 2016, APT28 compromised the same political party, again via targeted spearphishing. This time, the spearphishing email tricked recipients into changing their passwords through a fake webmail domain hosted on APT28 operational infrastructure. Using the harvested credentials, APT28 was able to gain access and steal content, likely leading to the exfiltration of information from multiple senior party members. The U.S. Government assesses that information was leaked to the press and publicly disclosed.

Great read thanks! :thumbsup

DT supporters won't read it, or believe it, unless DT tweets it.

This will be interesting. Will the CIA, NSA, etc, tell Trump that a foreign power has directly influenced a US presidential election, and then show him proof? (You know they have much, much more than this PDF.) And if Trump ignores this.... Can the US intelligence agencies somehow release this to the citizens, who will then demand Trump not only acknowledge it and do something?

Imagine for a moment the US intelligence agencies do just this, and the public accuses Trump of more or less working with Russia? Sounds far fetched? Where is his wife from? How many business interests does Trump have in Russia? How many people in his new administration have direct ties to Russia?

Holy shit this is going to be fun.

I think it's clear that DT will put a lid on this as soon as he's sworn in. They can't leak to wikileaks because they are part of the anti U.S. propaganda and Assange is paid by Russia owned RT & has a TV show with them.

In this case intelligence will leak like a leaky boat to congress & the MSM, and they could start working against the POTUS.

2 years until Dems take over and real investigation begin, until then will be this Mickey mouse bullshit with GOP congress doing light "investigations" and stonewalling until they push their agenda, than 1 1/2 years they'll start warming up for the expected takeover.

It will get good in a couple years, until then the GOP has to protect him until their agenda is passed. I really hope it gets done sooner and there's some huge findings implicating him made public that even a corrupt GOP congress can't ignore.

Time to send them to IT boot camp :2 cents:

Say what?

Even McCain just said:

McCain Doubts Russia Affected U.S. Election

McCain in Lithuania: He Doubts Russia Affected U.S. Election--But Wants Sanctions

Ps: same McCain said that Russians hacked into his campaign in 2008. So nothing new, yet libsters are trying to present it as it is something new, brought to you by evil Trump, lol.
Anti Obummers in 2008 were not crying about that like you anti Trumpsters.

Rochard 12-29-2016 04:50 PM

I am pretty sure our intelligence agencies can leak such information, but would they?

This is very, very upsetting for me. Jason Chaffetz was so concerned about a potential email security issue with Clinton's email but isn't even remotely concerned that Russia has improperly influenced our election. This is absolute proof that Congressman Chaffetz was less interested in securing classified information, and was only interested in political attacks.

The Republican party cannot just brush this off.

This is just fucking insane.

By "Affected U.S. Election" he means not changing who won the presidency.

The point isn't Putin picking the winner, it's Putin hacking.

Like Putin doping 100% of his Olympians. They were banned because he cheated by doping, not because they won or lost :thumbsup

This is how Putin is fucking things up for Russia for years, stupid petty shit to get an edge.

Hacking is going to become a huge problem. Hackers can direct our refrigerators and doorbells to take down Netflix for hours at a time. Our credit card information is pretty much an open book - it's not if your credit card data will be exposed, but when. And nearly all of us are open to this without even knowing it.

Jason Chavetz is a closeted minority Utah congressman, a shill for the GOP, he'll do whatever McConnell tells him to.

The GOP is party above country, this is clear. This is their last blast because the next two to four years their nasty underbelly and corruption will be exposed in a way never seen before.

So why do you direct it at DT supporters?

You implied that DT supporters would not like to hear that DT was elected by the help of Russians etc.

Like I said, McCains campaign was also hacked and it is nothing new, why would suddenly DT suppoerter "would not like to hear it"? Rhetorical question...

Kind of ironic that Trump made a big deal out of Hillary's server being not secure but then blows off Russian's hacking US targets. Also rather amusing to see the simple minded Trumplets repeat the same brainwashed talking points they are told to with out having the intelligence to think for themselves.

The more DT brushes it off right now, the more he backs himself into a corner. When he's POTUS, the more he undoes what's done, to favor Putin, the more he sticks his neck out. Perfectly prepped for the chopping block :thumbsup

This is what stuns me the most.... The Republican party pursued Clinton until the end of the world. We had nine investigations into Benghazi, yet everyone knew the truth before any of the investigations began - It was a terrorist attack that no one saw coming and nothing we could have done would have changed the outcome. It's the same thing with the Clinton's email scandal - No laws broken, no wrong doing, and no secret information was released yet they had two investigations into this.

Now we have proof that the Russians attempted to influence an American election and the only response the Republican party has is "meh, no big deal". Bullshit. This is a huge deal.

All they are worried about is party politics. They don't care about the country or the people. Right now they are rapidly pushing a plan to end ACA with nothing to take it's place, which means 8 million people will be with out heath insurance. This is despite Trumpleton claiming over and over he wouldn't do it until there was a replacement in place.

I can't wait to start seeing the whines from right dingbats when they lose their health insurance overnight..

Pence is the one doing all the work! He's the one who chose all the far right administration! Trump was shopping for a VP that would do all the work Keasich and all others declined, but Pence. Trump wants to be the public figures hired Pence to do all the "administrative" work. You will see Trump butt heads with his administration because of this. Pence hired people too far right for Trumps taste, he just doesn't know it yet.

How gullible are you people?? Talking to you Bladewire and Crockett and Rochard. If you believe Russia "hacked the election" or tricked America into voting a certain way, you're mistaken. If you believe Hillary should have won even though she gave weapons to ISIS, killed the Libya peace deal & Gaddafi over a personal vendetta, ruined the middle east, created an international refugee crisis, and stole the election from Bernie Sanders with massive fraud, you're mistaken. Do you clowns even read wikileaks? Or was that "doctored by Russians" as Donna Brazille claims? :1orglaugh

So the Department of Homeland Security is telling us lies? Sure sure.

Did I even read wikileaks? No, of course not. It's impossible to verify. I have no idea what is real on that site or what is fake.

And this right here in the problem. All of this has become about politics. For the past four years the Republican party has used Congress as a weapon against their political candidate. They spent four years investigating bullshit and nonsense, and now that we have a real security issue they are fucking blowing it off? You must be fucking kidding me.

I am not a Clinton supporter. The person I wanted to vote for was Republican. I only voted for Clinton because she was (much) better than Trump. This isn't political for me; This isn't "Our side lost so now we must save face". This is about another country directly fucking with our elections.

How is it that Jason Chaffetz was so concerned about silly emails and a terrorist attack, but isn't interested in this at all? He is obviously nothing short of a traitor.

At this point I have decided many conservatives and Republicans will not believe anything that is in the mainstream media or that comes from the government unless it comes directly from Trump's mouth or twitter feed.

I expect my government to do it's fucking job already. When the Department of Homeland Security says Russia interfered with our last election, I expect our government to JUMP into action - not shrug it off.

Anyone in our government who is not at the very least demanding an investigation into this is a traitor in my book.

This is just a fishing expedition. The Dems want wikileaks to spill the beans on the leaker before Obama leaves office just in case it's not who they originally thought it was > Seth Rich.. So they will keep ramping up these claims over the next few weeks hoping wikileaks gives them something more to chew on.

Was Seth Rich Russian too? Rochard, you're simply mistaken if you believe Russians somehow got Trump elected. The Podesta wikileaks have been cryptographically verified to be genuine. Leaks, not hacks. Also, let's not forget that John Podesta left his smartphone in a cab. Then he fell for a password phishing scam on his Gmail account. Do I need to mention Hillary's illegal, unsecure email server? These clowns can't even manage their own email security, and you want them running the country???

Finally, yeah, we do know the source of the leaks- it was our own agents at the NSA and FBI, who have everyone's email that ever gets sent. It was revealed by the former Deputy Assistant Secretary of State. Watch:

Paul Markham 12-30-2016 01:36 AM

How are we forgetting that we "hacked" and evesdropped on Angela Merkel and Lula, among others? This is what governments do.

This is like pointing at someone for speeding 5 miles an hour over the speed limit and saying they were "speeding to exfiltrate information".

I believe in building a strong democrat party but this is more bullshit:

1. Recount
2. Electoral
3. Russia

All bullshit, and it won't work. As pointed out above, Trump supporters don't care, and he won't either.

Governments spy, it's what they do. Did we think the 10,000 person Russian intelligence unit was for show? Putin RAN the KGB.

Of course it's what govts do, but usually govt's are smart enough not to get caught but also hacking is usually a "passive" role gathering intel not an aggressive role such as melding in elections or releasing the captured information to harm one candidate but not releasing information on the other.

This is what Russia did, it wasn't a simple case of tit for tat information stealing which all govts do, it was direct interference in US election. That is why it's a bigger deal and will cause the US govt to seek reprisals.

Everyone knows we hack each other for information, this was not that. This was on the level of saying taking out a power plant.. It was a actual attack not a "cyber" attack.

bronco67 12-30-2016 07:57 AM

I haven't read the whole thread yet, but before I do I'm going to make an initial, blind guess that the usual conservative assholes are saying this is all bullshit cooked up by the US intelligence agencies to make the Saint Putin look bad.

tony286 12-30-2016 08:15 AM

No the Russians didn't do it. Its just luck Putins BFF came out of nowhere to be picked for Sec of State. No quid pro quo or anything like that. lol

If the Russians hacked the DNC and then gave Wikileaks the information, then yes, the Russians sure did help to get Trump elected.

Let's just say the Russians had nothing to do with this.... A major political party in the United States was hacked and emails handed out like candy given to kids for the only purpose of influencing our election.... How isn't our Congress demanding an investigation at the highest level?

No they hacked both the DNC and the RNC servers but releaseed only the DNC info to hurt Clinton but then sat on the info gained from the RNC. Meaning they were actively trying to have a role in the election.

Even Republicans are saying they were hacked and Russia needs to be punished. The only ones claiming it didn't happen is the Russians and Trump.

Simple- the wikileaks emails implicate no less than 6 members of Congress involved in the large DC pedophile ring. Also these were LEAKS, not hacks. Seth Rich paid with his life. Are we also forgetting that John Podesta left his phone in a cab? And he fell for the ol' change your password phishing scam on his gmail account. The intelligence community has already come forward and explained that THEY leaked the material to wikileaks. The leaks show that the Podesta brothers are pedophiles and good buddies with known pedophiles like Dennis Hastert and that many are still on the loose in Washington. Isn't that right, MITCH McCONNELL??

Goddammit Crockett TURN OFF RACHEL MADDOW. This is FALSE. There was no hack of the RNC, proven fact. You clowns are so upset about leaked emails, but don't care about all the nefarious dealings the emails revealed. Fuck off to North Korea, unamerican commies!

The people hacked fell for spearfishing sites. This country is in trouble if our government workers and political operatives are this l4m3.

Time to send them to IT boot camp :2 cents:

AI and big brother may become necessary.

When did phishing become spearfishing?
