Do you prefer subtitles that are encoded into the videos or subtitles as closed caption?

When watching a foreign film, porn, etc do you prefer hard subtitles that are encoded into the video or do you prefer soft subs like closed captioning where you can turn the subtitles on or off?

I think I prefer the closed caption type softsubs like youtube has over the hardcoded ones that can't be turned off. Like if I'm gonna watch a scene a second time, I no longer care what she's saying and would rather just see her holes without text getting in the way. For whatever reason it seems foreign porn sites never do closed captions though and just stick to encoding the subtitles directly in the video. Kind of annoying.

What do you think about subs?

If we're talking about a movie in a language I don't know, then either is fine so long as if they are hard-coded, then they're cleanly burned in. If I don't speak the language, I don't see myself ever not using captioning.

All of our movies are hard-coded. I feel there would be a security risk to having the subtitle file separate since some of what we show already is hosted on many file lockers (without subtitles). If a nefarious user got the file, he could theoretically match it up with a file locker upload for instant illicit captioning.

Also forgot to add that sometimes movies may have on-screen captioning already with special effects--some of our updates are like this. A non-hardcode approach may end up with all the subtitles appearing plainly on the screen, but with hardcoding and a capable encoder along with someone who knows how to work special effects in subtitling software, you can have your captioning look really cool (fade outs, moving, different colors, etc.).

I can't think of a worse subtitle experience... I'd almost prefer it being 6 seconds out of sync than a bunch of 'cool' effects.

We only add 'cool' effects if the source movie has them. For example. if an on-screen caption is red with a black box, we'd match ours up on top or below it also red with a black box.
