Any ideas on something one could do just starting out to earn 1k a month?

Offer a service. Get on Fiverr or similar to get started. You can build your sites while you earn.

Acquire a decent blog network of at least 25 well back-linked blogs, use contact email, linkspun ( smartly), etc and sell posts. At 4 to 5 per day you can easily make that.

What are your skills?

Open a cam WhiteLabel then build another 30 sites(blogs and etc) optimized for SEO where to promote your whitelabel ! Focus on SEO + on content and in 1 -1,5 years you will make at least 1k at month !

First starting making a few dollars per day (at least) and then rinse and repeat. Do not expect to make money out of thin air.

Stop chatting here and start working?

It's getting difficult now, maybe try doing a webmaster referral site where you recommend the best sites to promote, like SignBucks

I remember when I just came into this business and was in awe of people making bank, while myself I couldn't afford to buy a domain.

15 years later i'm doing good. I guess it just takes some effort and time.

So ofc you see a lot of noobs around. People who are banking have little reason to post, so you don't see them much.

Just work everyday. And do your job better everyday. Better than yesterday.
