Need quick help with NameCheap please! $200 to "reinstate" 27 day expired domain

I have a domain that expired 29 days ago.

I just got notice that someone changed my whois.

I just contacted NameCheap and it takes them 18 minutes on live chat to tell me that I will have to pay $200 + $10.87 to renew my 5 letter domain name!

Has this happened to anyone else? What recourse do I have with them?

I got the support guy on chat now it's taking him about 5 minutes to answer each question.

Bladewire 01-18-2017 10:12 AM

25 minutes now on "live Chat" with Dmitriy Savchenko "support" :1orglaugh

pimpmaster9000 01-18-2017 10:19 AM

Is the domain name worth more than $200 to you? If so go ahead and pay up. It is a 5 letter domain it will probably get picked up in an auction somewhere or get deleted and then picked up by dropcatching by some investor and they will ask 4-5 figures for it....

Well the problem is my whois was changed today without my permission to:

Registrant Name: T CLAYTON
Registrant Organization:
Registrant Street: 30 ABBEY ST
Registrant City: SAN FRANCISCO
Registrant State/Province: CA
Registrant Postal Code: 94113
Registrant Country: US
Registrant Phone: +1.5089520110
Registrant Phone Ext:
Registrant Fax:
Registrant Fax Ext:
Registrant Email:

The "support" guy says my domain wasn't auctioned or sold, but wont answer how my whois was changed. I don't get it.

35 minutes on "live chat" support. I'm moving all my domains back to GoDaddy this is bullshit

BlackCrayon 01-18-2017 10:34 AM

that whois means namecheap thinks its valuable and is keeping it for themselves. if you have a lot of domains with them threaten to leave.

Yeah thanks for the advice. I did that and they wont budge. The domain is Zoreo.com so yeah , fucking assholes.

Bladewire 01-18-2017 10:43 AM

55 minutes on support , they average 5 minute wait per question to get answered FUCK

It is an OK domain name it will go to "pre-release" auctions if they have such a thing or will be picked up 100% at drop by investors. 200$ is the cheapest possible scenario at this point if you want to keep it.

Yeah $200 is worth it but I'm going through the hassle of transfering all my other domains to Godaddy now NameCheap is too amateur.

One of my recent expired domains is fuckassholes.com and fuckassholes.xyz

I asked him to list my previously expired domains :1orglaugh:1orglaugh

TheDynasty 01-18-2017 10:52 AM

Sounds like they are fucking you around, I've renewed after that time period without hassle hope you get your domain back Blade

Bladewire 01-18-2017 10:54 AM

They are fucking me around. I've had other domains expire past that with them, never a $200 fee.

I've Google the situation and they charge the $200 renewal on domains they think they can make money on with their auction.

NameCheap are greedy assholes

From our conversation:

"If the domain is not re-instated in this phase, it?s released to the public and becomes available approximately in 80-85 days *if not* auctioned off by upstream vendors."

Yeah how shady is that?

They don't use their NameCheap Registrant ID, they make you think an individual owns the domain now, not that they put it in redemption period. Shady!

Linkster 01-18-2017 11:02 AM

And if your domain was only 29 days past expiration you should have been able to renew it...at 30 days after expiration it enters a hold called the redemption period where they have to hold it for you for another 30 days...ICANN policy is that during that redemption period a registrar can charge you $150 charge to renew....but the first 30 days should be normal price...unless there are some weird circumstances
I would call them on that

mineistaken 01-18-2017 11:03 AM

consider my sig if you are moving to gd

NameCheap charges you $200 after 27 days. If they think the domain is valuable they charge $200, if not, they charge normal renewal fee. This guy here explains it very well, evidently it's their common practice now at NameCheap.

Brian mike 01-18-2017 11:07 AM

Started to think for a while now to move all my domain from namecheap since some weird stuff happening in my account. :2 cents:

CamsEtc 01-18-2017 11:13 AM

Pretty slimy to me! Time to move some domains.

Fat Panda 01-18-2017 11:26 AM

Same here...

Barry-xlovecam 01-18-2017 11:56 AM

Leave the domains on auto renew unless you want to dump them (expire). Each domain has its own auto renew setting at Namecheap in their dashboard. Support is dim there ...

robwod 01-18-2017 12:06 PM

Funny thing I've noticed. I've been moving a few domains away from NameCheap and splitting them between name.com and namesilo.com

But when I click to to turn off whois privacy, or unlock a domain, or to get an EPP code sent to me, sometimes the whois privacy automatically turns back on, sometimes the domain re-locks itself, and in several cases now, the initial EPP code was incorrect and I have had to generate new ones.

I did use Live Chat earlier as I was waiting for EPP codes since last night and the person I spoke to re-initialized the EPP code emails (the button to do it myself was invisible).

Not sure what's going on there, but it's not exactly reassuring when you see things like this happen. If anything, it encourages me to migrate others I was not considering moving away.

Speigelau 01-18-2017 12:30 PM

Wait till you try and renew a domain at Godaddy after 29 days.

I'm having this problem now switching them over. Not good.

I also don't like that 27 days after a domain expires it's taken off your expired domains list! It's like they try to make you forget about your domains as much as possible and make it difficult to transfer.

Why 27 days instead of the standard 30 day? shady!

Barry-xlovecam 01-18-2017 12:45 PM

Loophole -- registrar sets the terms apparently.
Quote:

"About grace and redemption periods

For most extensions, Register4Less provides you with a 40 day grace period in which you can renew your domain after expiry at the normal renewal price. If your domain is expired, however, any email, web hosting or other service will stop working.

Once the grace period ends, a registry imposed 30 day redemption period adds an $80 redemption fee to the normal renewal fee, and during this time, a redemption renewal is the only guaranteed way to retain ownership of your domain. Once the redemption period is over, the domain will be released and become available to anyone to register as a new domain."

I remember reading similiar thing on here from another member. Think it was Madawgz or Oracle Porn. He lost four letter dotcom's because he claimed he didn't get any notices of them expiring.

That's my concern. I don't trust them anymore.

27 days instead of the normal 29-30 days of other registrars, on top of not being consistent with $200 fee unless they think the domain is worth something, shady as fuck.

Actually, the same thing happened to me with a hand-reg. I wasn't certain if I was going to keep it or not. And when I was going to renew support told me. $200. I kept a similiar domain, didn't bother paying $200. And now the domain is for sale at Huge Domains for $1195.

grace periods are all over the map. godaddy is only 18 days. namesilo is 33 i think. dynadot is 40.

Godaddy is 25 days and then you'll have to pay the exorbitant fee to get the domain back.

I've been with Go daddy for years and late many times, never paid an extra fee. Must be a new trend. Maybe the domain market is flattening out?

sarettah 01-18-2017 04:28 PM

I would go with Namesilo before GoDaddy.

Just imho of course.
