Need advice: Sell clips or do full membership site?

I've been filming some adult content and can't decide whether or not to sell it on a clips site like Clips4Sale or just start a regular membership site. Would love some opinions from you folks. Here are the pros and cons I have so far.

Clips Site Pros:
  • Next to nothing startup costs
  • C4S has a large user base so good exposure
  • Good way to test site concept and if successful convert it into a paysite.

Clips Site Cons:
  • Need to give up large percentage of profits so it will take longer to break even and make money.

Paysite Pros:
  • Able to keep more of the income... unless I do an affiliate program.
  • Affiliate program would help get the word out quick about the site.
  • Good if I want to build a long-term brand.

Paysite Cons:
  • Startup costs of probably at least $10K (CMS software, hosting, bill processing, etc.)
  • Big gamble... could do a site that bombs.

On the surface it seems like a clips site strategy would be lower risk but the paysite option has the potential for bigger rewards. What do you guys think? Am I forgetting any pros/cons?

It is definitely less time consuming to sell clips on sites such as clips4sale. Check out this thread:

we added the ppv option to our cms about 5 years ago. we've had a lot of clients try it out with mixed results. after a lot of research and stats, i came to a final conclusion about ppv/clip stores.

Selling clips will always be harder than selling subscriptions. Clips can't compare in value for dollar. The only way to raise the value of a clip is to increase scarcity. Rare fetish clips are the only things that sell.

rare fetish is why clips4sale succeeds. we have a couple ppv fetish stores doing well, but 9 out of 10 fail. if you want to do clips, start out on clips4sale as Jerkules recommended. their revenue share sucks, but its a good place to launch your brand.

by the way, your startup cost for a paysite is not $10k+. this is a fallacy spread around by the cms crews that want to take u for $10k+. PornCMS is $29/month and includes everything u need to get started (other than billing).

you can send the other $9,971 to your favorite charity (or hooker).

You should also be looking at content partnership programs on tubes. You get revshare when your videos are viewed, and your videos get a link to your clipstore or paysite. So you get paid, and also get some free traffic. win-win.

I would obviously start with a clipstore. So much easier to get started. Plus no one wants to pay for your shit paysite when brazzers exists. But people will pay for your clips on c4s if they're good.

Thanks for that info. I was including things like MC/Visa setup ($1,000 a year I think), legal fees, marketing, etc. in my $10K estimate but maybe I overshot this too much.

If I can start a paysite for a few grand that's a much easier risk to live with than $10K.

Also, just to clarify, my content isn't really in a unique fetish so it sounds like it would get lost on a clips site.

Thanks for the feedback everyone!

Yeah. You always want to have small projects with fast turnaround as plan A. Then slowly work on the big long-term projects on the side. So both.
