Fuck Star Trek. You want some good sci-fi? Go see Arrival.
So I finally saw Arrival yesterday in the threatre. I absolutely loved it. Finally my brain had some much needed Science-Fiction THINKFood, in stark contrast to the last Fast & Furious in Space, Star Trek Beyond.
I know Arrival has been in theatres for months now and will probably show up on on-demand in a few days, but its worth checking out on the big screen. |
|
Reminded me of contact, only the contact was for most of the movie.

Anyone see the metaphor for the university professor (main character) and her ignoring the world and being the last to find out.

I watched Arrival on Saturday night, I was sleeping within 20 mins of the movie starting. Woke up shortly after with my wife asking me if I was sleeping. Such a boring movie, not my style at all. We only watched it since it was Oscar nominated, wish I didn't bother.

Was superb, watched it twice! :thumbsup

Then again, I knew *nothing at all* about this moving going into it, except that it was about aliens. I was really surprised at how much I enjoyed it. I loved the story, the acting, the VFX, the sound , etc. I especially love how it was shot. And wow!!!! Its nominated for 8 Oscars! Arrival - Awards - IMDb I didn't know that until just now. I don't know if its best movie of the year or best directing etc, but I would say maybe Best Cinematography? Anyway, if you like Sci-Fi and are tired of the senseless action sub-genre and want some good brain candy, Check out Arrival. Worth seeing in the theatre. |
I liked the idea of Arrival. I liked the commercials, but then I saw it and zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
|
i cunt a4d 2 go c it... :(
|

I did watch The Girl On The Train last night and that is a must watch movie, especially if you haven't read the book and like me did not know the plot of the movie because it swings like crazy. My wife had read the book and was loving watching me try to unravel it all and figure out who did what. Great movie. |

best picture in one of the decades worst turn out for movies of all time. Fences was ok, hidden figures was alright--both will be forgotten in a few years though. |
The Expanse on Syfy fucking rocks!

Seen it. Was hoping for a good sci fi movie, instead it was extremely boring. I've had it with these type of pretentious sci fi movies, after the horrible ending of interstellar we get this.
SPOILER: The 'time is relative' idea is interesting, but damn, what a boring, long introduction to a horribly simplistic ending, seemingly 'clever' only to a pretentious crowd... anti climatic. I want to be entertained, be it with an adventure or with a compelling story that keeps your attention... i was expecting the latter but it completely failed. 8 on imdb last i checked, wtf :Oh crap |
I like the movie but they ruined the end...it could have gone better ways in the end...hollywood has an end problem...

spectral was ok

PS: This trailer really captures the mood. It's has muted colors, a dark and gloomy soundtrack, and amazing dark and creepy feel. (Though the trailer gives away too much). |
If you like this sort of stuff, watch The Expanse. Just do it, you'll see.
|
A Yeah sure if you want to spend a few hours watching Amy Adams under-act then have fun. Seriously her character has the personality of a box of corn flakes. I know Microsoft employees who are more interesting than her.

Reminded me of Solaris (the original of course) ...

Haven't seen it yet...I hear it's a cerebral movie. Might explain why it's not going over so well around here.

The conclusion of the movie is too simple for such a long, boring build up. Only people who think they are smart will think this movie is clever - in reality this movie is extremely simplistic. It's sad that i have to explain to you what 'pretentious' means. Compare it to the people who thought "inception" was complex... Those are people who cannot comprehend the idea of the multi layered dream storylines - they don't get it even though it is being literally explained at the start and throughout the movie. Cannot get more obvious than that, so if you still have trouble you are not very smart. It's an ok idea, the movie was entertaining, but even though there were multi layered stories - this movie was very linear and simplistic. Anyone who says it blew their mind isn't smart. It is such a straight forward movie that it can't blow your mind if you watch and understand 'the rules' of the realm in this movie (which they explain every 5 minutes in case you missed it). Btw i smiled when i saw you of all people mentioning an IQ test. No offense but you are not exactly the sharpest tool in the shed... like i said no offense, it's not like you can do anything about it :thumbsup |
I stopped reading at "fuck Star Trek".

I just added Arrival to my to-do list :))

Nice, I was thinking about grabbing a matinee. Just hoping it's not too slow like every sci fi movie lately.

the deeper the dreamlayer, the slower the time went. Let's take a factor of 60 for example: Real world sleeping: 1 second Dreamlayer 1: 1 minute Dreamlayer 2: 1 hour Dreamlayer 3: 60 hours Very linear and not complex. The spinning thing was a gimmick to leave people in the dark in the end. "will it fall? Or is this a dreamlayer as well? Oh my!" The end. Now it was pretty entertaining and that's what movies are about. It was just a linear adventure movie, but instead of physically going to locations in James Bond movies, this used the dreamlayers for that. |

agree with OP, good solid hard SF movie, only compareable to Contact.
for me SF movie of last decade was District 9, now Arrival is holding strong for best of this decade. |
