Fuck Star Trek. You want some good sci-fi? Go see Arrival.

So I finally saw Arrival yesterday in the threatre. I absolutely loved it. Finally my brain had some much needed Science-Fiction THINKFood, in stark contrast to the last Fast & Furious in Space, Star Trek Beyond.

I know Arrival has been in theatres for months now and will probably show up on on-demand in a few days, but its worth checking out on the big screen.

HowlingWulf 01-30-2017 09:30 AM

I thought 'Arrival' was pretty blah.

Have you seen 'The Arrival' with Charlie Sheen?

PornDiscounts-V 01-30-2017 09:40 AM

Reminded me of contact, only the contact was for most of the movie.

Saw THE. I liked it, but _ was much better.

Anyone see the metaphor for the university professor (main character) and her ignoring the world and being the last to find out.

I watched Arrival on Saturday night, I was sleeping within 20 mins of the movie starting. Woke up shortly after with my wife asking me if I was sleeping. Such a boring movie, not my style at all. We only watched it since it was Oscar nominated, wish I didn't bother.

wehateporn 01-30-2017 11:56 AM

Was superb, watched it twice! :thumbsup

I was gonna watch it, last night, but I ended up with something else. By your description, I'm glad I did :thumbsup

Really? I'm surprised you found it boring... I was mesmerized right from the very beginning.

Then again, I knew *nothing at all* about this moving going into it, except that it was about aliens. I was really surprised at how much I enjoyed it. I loved the story, the acting, the VFX, the sound , etc. I especially love how it was shot.

And wow!!!! Its nominated for 8 Oscars!

Arrival - Awards - IMDb

I didn't know that until just now.

I don't know if its best movie of the year or best directing etc, but I would say maybe Best Cinematography?

Anyway, if you like Sci-Fi and are tired of the senseless action sub-genre and want some good brain candy, Check out Arrival. Worth seeing in the theatre.

ruff 01-30-2017 12:16 PM

I liked the idea of Arrival. I liked the commercials, but then I saw it and zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

If you like Sci Fi then its worth a watch, its 1hr 45m, not the end of the world. I'm not into Sci Fi tho but I like Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner so figured it would be worth the watch, I was wrong.

I did watch The Girl On The Train last night and that is a must watch movie, especially if you haven't read the book and like me did not know the plot of the movie because it swings like crazy. My wife had read the book and was loving watching me try to unravel it all and figure out who did what. Great movie.

Exactly... 'thinkfood' my ass.. they took a good story idea, doped it up with quaaludes and forgot to write an ending... It wasn't the worst, but it wasn't good..

best picture in one of the decades worst turn out for movies of all time. Fences was ok, hidden figures was alright--both will be forgotten in a few years though.

H-Tom 01-30-2017 04:32 PM

The Expanse on Syfy fucking rocks!

nico-t 01-30-2017 05:27 PM

Seen it. Was hoping for a good sci fi movie, instead it was extremely boring. I've had it with these type of pretentious sci fi movies, after the horrible ending of interstellar we get this.

SPOILER:

The 'time is relative' idea is interesting, but damn, what a boring, long introduction to a horribly simplistic ending, seemingly 'clever' only to a pretentious crowd... anti climatic. I want to be entertained, be it with an adventure or with a compelling story that keeps your attention... i was expecting the latter but it completely failed. 8 on imdb last i checked, wtf :Oh crap

pimpmaster9000 01-30-2017 05:41 PM

I like the movie but they ruined the end...it could have gone better ways in the end...hollywood has an end problem...

brassmonkey 01-30-2017 05:58 PM

OK, then how about "Fuck Star Trek: Beyond"? You have to admit it was truly awful. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for a good action movie. Star Trek 2009 had a great balance of action and science fiction and human-vulcan stories, and a sci-fi(?) concept that I always like - Black Holes, Time Travel and Alternate realities. BEYOND just had none of that. Dumb action, boring story, endless plot holes, bad science, and shitty direction by Justin Lin. Oh and lets not forget Rhianna's screaching over the end credits.. My mind wanted to kill me for making it sit through that crappy movie.

Cool thanks! I think it's available on demand. Will check it out this weekend.

I'm so surprised... I thought the ending was perfect. SEMI-SPOILER AHEAD: Once you learn about Amy Adam's character and realize the ending, it's just the saddest thing. A good Sci-Movie WITH a sad ending? Amazing. Bravo. It could have ended with a feel-good high-five thing which movies usually end with. I'm glad it didn't.

PS: This trailer really captures the mood. It's has muted colors, a dark and gloomy soundtrack, and amazing dark and creepy feel. (Though the trailer gives away too much).

If you like this sort of stuff, watch The Expanse. Just do it, you'll see.

VikingMan 01-30-2017 09:07 PM

A Yeah sure if you want to spend a few hours watching Amy Adams under-act then have fun. Seriously her character has the personality of a box of corn flakes. I know Microsoft employees who are more interesting than her.

There is a promotional copy up on Pirate Bay.

reread my little review, it's the other way around.
The conclusion of the movie is too simple for such a long, boring build up.

Only people who think they are smart will think this movie is clever - in reality this movie is extremely simplistic.

It's sad that i have to explain to you what 'pretentious' means.

Compare it to the people who thought "inception" was complex... Those are people who cannot comprehend the idea of the multi layered dream storylines - they don't get it even though it is being literally explained at the start and throughout the movie. Cannot get more obvious than that, so if you still have trouble you are not very smart.
It's an ok idea, the movie was entertaining, but even though there were multi layered stories - this movie was very linear and simplistic.
Anyone who says it blew their mind isn't smart. It is such a straight forward movie that it can't blow your mind if you watch and understand 'the rules' of the realm in this movie (which they explain every 5 minutes in case you missed it).

Btw i smiled when i saw you of all people mentioning an IQ test. No offense but you are not exactly the sharpest tool in the shed... like i said no offense, it's not like you can do anything about it :thumbsup

I don't know, I like her. And don't forget the tragedy that happens to her character in this film. I thought she did a good job, though, I found myself reminded of "Lois Lane" once or twice. Maybe she won't win any awards for a while but I still liked her in it.

I never saw the original. I know, bad. I saw the remake with George Clooney. I liked it, but like 2001, it was freaking hard to watch (slow, boring, etc). I saw Solaris twice and still don't understand the ending. Was it all in his head? Did his wife exist? Did Solaris make a copy for him? Ugh..

I think you're off here a little. "Complex" can mean hard to understand, or it can mean detailed. Inception was incredibly complex, in that it was highly detailed. Yes they explain what is going on, but only in simple terms. Besides the story, the music offers a cue as to what is going on. Cobb's spinning top may not be his true totem. Time moves at different speeds depending on the dream layer. Complex doesn't begin to describe Inception.

Look what TV show has every character perfect? For you probably Vikings, but for the rest of us, all shows have one or two cringers. For me it is the lead character's dipshit hairstyle but whatever - it's a show.

i disagree, it wasn't complex.

the deeper the dreamlayer, the slower the time went. Let's take a factor of 60 for example:
Real world sleeping: 1 second
Dreamlayer 1: 1 minute
Dreamlayer 2: 1 hour
Dreamlayer 3: 60 hours
Very linear and not complex.

The spinning thing was a gimmick to leave people in the dark in the end. "will it fall? Or is this a dreamlayer as well? Oh my!" The end.

Now it was pretty entertaining and that's what movies are about. It was just a linear adventure movie, but instead of physically going to locations in James Bond movies, this used the dreamlayers for that.

Prepare to be dissapointed, the whole movie is about the most non-exciting thing ever in case aliens will land on earth, with an annoying and unoriginal (anti) climax.

It's not an action movie, but I wouldn't call it slow either. I found it compelling and was hooked from the beginning.

druid66 02-07-2017 09:52 AM

agree with OP, good solid hard SF movie, only compareable to Contact.
for me SF movie of last decade was District 9, now Arrival is holding strong for best of this decade.
