This woman is just horrible. She knows nothing about public education, NOTHING at all. She's never been to a public school, nor has her kids been to a public school. She thinks the problem IS public schools, and wants to send everyone to private school. She doesn't understand that we spend $11k per year per student, and sending ALL kids to private schools would cost five times that - and still wouldn't work for all kids.

That's not a good sign...and here I thought kids were finally going to be allowed to carry guns to school legally....I worry about those kids when there are bears around :thumbsup

US Public Education is pathetic compared to other modern industrialized countries. Especially when you consider educational value per dollar spent. Why force taxpayers to pay for a system that doesn't work? Don't reward incompetence. It only allows it to grow.
With vouchers there is competition. Monopolies are only good for the owner of the monopoly. If you don't want to send your kid to religious schools then don't. Likewise don't force others to send their kids to schools that produce more "snowflakes" than well prepared and educated critical thinkers. And how the hell does it cost $11K a year to educate a student? Use some technology please. The cost of replication in a digital economy approaches $0. You could spend more than all the blockbuster movies combined to make some really engaging multimedia education courses and give students a brand new laptop every year and still be well under $11K per student. A system that can't properly educate a student for $11K a year needs to die and make way for a system that can. Hell, you can even get rid of schools altogether and pay students up to $5K a year based on how well they pass the tests and they will probably learn better than with no schools whatsoever. They will form their own tutoring and schools and probably be a hell of a lot better than public education. Vouchers reward schools that can successfully educate children and punish those that can't. |

It's all about funneling tax payer money to private business. DeVos and her family championed charter schools here in Michigan, most of which are under performing and no oversight or accountability. Hence when she was asked repeatedly about holding charter schools accountable to minimum standards she kept deflecting the question |

Also for the record I went to two different private schools when I was a kid, both being religious, one at least was pretty high rated. Both of these were extremely lacking in their math & science departments. History at both was always over-toned with religious garbage.. Also my Jr High School was a pretty rough school (public) and it was still a better education than either of the 2 private schools. In fact I had to catch up after going to the private schools for 3 years because my math skills weren't up to par and I had a hard time in science as well. Luckily, I convinced my parents to send me to public schools so I didn't end up like JohnyClips & JoushaMo.. |

While I don't like the idea of politicians funneling money to their own private business?or their crony friends?funneling it to highly wasteful government education doesn't seem like it is any better. I think the ultimate goal is to improve education or bring down costs either. The current system seems to be failing so continuing it doesn't make much sense. "The definition of insanity is doing the same thing and expecting a different result". However, if those schools do indeed suck, why would parents choose to send their kids there? I'm all for higher standards in education but who gets to decide the standards? Seems like letting parents choose the schools and standards would do a decent job of weeding out the underperformers. When you let people decide, they are likely to choose the best option for the lowest cost. When you let government decide, they far too often choose the most expensive option with the least amount of work required of them. |

Either way Devos failed and they chose her to take that failed system nationwide . Not to mention she was a sanctimonious bitch, with a superiority complex, when going through confirmation. She reminded me of the evil witch in Harry Potter. |

If you don't want to be forced to pay for private school then why force others to pay for "public" school. People can disagree about which is the better school but whenever you deny people a choice, that's a monopoly, and monopolies tend to result in higher costs and lower quality. |
