Romanian government under pressure as 500,000 protest
Mass rallies persist nationwide despite scrapping of contentious decree that decriminalised some corruption offences. Romanian government under pressure as 500,000 protest | Romania News | Al Jazeera Freedom for Romania! |
Free from what?
They live in systematic corruption. Twenty-five years ago, the Communist leaders of Eastern Europe were falling like dominoes. And on Christmas Day in 1989, Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceausescu and his wife, Elena, were executed by firing squad. Where do you think they learned this? |
Decrminalizing corruption is not good. Any politician that was behind the decree should be publicly shot. Government is for the people not for opportunistic criminals.

I don't know how corrupt Romania was in the 1800's. But I have daily dealings with Romanian coworkers and hear their comments about the condition of the corruption there.
We have facilities in Bucharest -- our customer and model support is headquartered there. We also contract with many Romanian cam studios and models. Most allude to the conditions of the Soviet supported regime of Ceausescu and the normalization of graft, corruption and tax evasion that became a Romanian tradition. |

That's what should be done when crooked stuff like this happens - applauding the Romanians.

Not much comparing the size of a country but still, I envy their people how they are fighting what they don't like. Wasn't expecting that from corrupted Romania, but I was wrong. Pressure on the government definitely works

Comments I have head involve;
Healthcare -- it free (or very cheap) but if you don't bribe the medical personnel you might die waiting in the hospital hallway. All taxes; income and VAT are evaded when possible. Is the national sport ... Getting a business license either takes forever or you grease all the government clerks and officials with bribes to get things done. Government and healthcare workers are poorly paid and bribes are accepted supplemental income. Many other countries are similar. Last time I flew from Prague to Bucharest my next chair passenger was an engineer for Lear Siegler, one of the largest automotive seat manufacturers in the world -- he was flying in to inspect the plant in Romania. Lear Siegler is there for the same reasons we are -- lower cost labor in the Euro area. We pay the prevailing wage or better in Romania but that is a lot less than France or Holland. Prices are varied in Romania. Property in Bucharest is rather expensive compared to wage scales. The average unskilled wage in Romania ain't much; Romania Average Salary Income - Job Comparison |
