Accelerated Mobile Pages: My Experience

Recently I implemented "Accelerated Mobile Pages" on my websites (including pornharmony.com, pornado.co, tubesafari.com, and others). I was interested to see if it would have an impact in my google rankings.

TL;DR: Overall, accelerated mobile pages have caused me to have a worse bounce rate, and lose google traffic.

Because you can't use javascript, the accelerated mobile versions of my pages are less engaging. You don't get thumbnail scrollbooks, ajax-scrolling for new search results, or search filters. You have to go to the main site for those. Also I think it might be off-putting to users that the pages are served from google's cache; google adds an "amp" header that's different than in their normal browser which might make them wonder about security or tracking or something. It's unusual for porn, at any rate. So bounce rates were higher on these pages.

I saw organic traffic growth stagnate since I launched them, and today I took a big hit. I have to assume it's because the bounce rate is so much worse on the AMP version of pages. So I've now removed accelerated mobile pages from my websites.

I thought some of you who are considering implementing accelerated mobile pages on your sites might be interested in my experience. Thanks for reading!

Funny you said that about the AMP header. I just updated my browser on my phone and NOW the AMP header has a link to the original page but for the last year I'd search out non AMP pages to link to in posts because I didn't want to give Google that link juice, I saw it as unfair to the content creator.

AMP is for mainstream branding.
I am not surprised it's basically useless for porn sites.
Most Google ideas are crap anyway -- stop sucking Google dick.

Plus you can have cache by using memcached and getting same effect.

Right, and I'd actually prefer it that way. If I wanted to serve cached results w/o hitting my servers I'd be using cloudflare. I was bummed when I realized amp pages were coming straight from google's cache; it makes server-side analytics/tracking impossible for those requests. And without JavaScript you can't do it client-side so you're basically SOL for something as simple as knowing a user watched a video. Unacceptable, really.
