What's all the hype about "Arrival" ???

What a piece of shit.

Started off interesting, good photography, decent acting, slow 'intense' camera work (shot by a new film student, all these films look the same now.) Basic premise of: 'government needs help from the local woman' that knows how to translate foreign languages, to help save the world, Wow, she is so unique. YAWN.

then...

gets so slow and borderline BORING....

then picked up a little bit.... then....

GETS EVEN SLOWER DURING THE 2ND ACT (HUGE MISTAKE)

Not to give away too much, but Squids?? Really??? These intense super beings are fucking overgrown squids?? LOL They're really running out of ideas for creating aliens. They even 'shot ink' just like squids. It's like the writer saw some ocean sea life documentary and it stuck in his head.

How about, creating something NEW that we don't have here on Earth?? We already have squids.
This movie stunk of Independence day, big oval ships landing all around the planet, including similar aliens. Oh well....

Then, it twisted into some kind of sad love story and left you hanging with no answers and NO ENDING. I like the whole 'writing and language' thing, but do something with it all!!! Don't just END the film.

It's like the writer had an interesting premise, then DIDN'T FINISH THE SCRIPT.

A HUGE WASTE OF TIME. ARRIVAL, I WANT MY VIDEO RENTAL FEE RETURNED!!!

Fuck.

oh, last gripe.... They have to bring in canaries??? Really??? Top high end scientists with the best equipment and they bring in birds to make sure the air is breathable and there is no radiation or other nastiness in the air?? Is this a 1950's Godzilla movie??? LOL

Now, I can say it... FUCK.

I thought it was amazing. One of the best movies I have seen in a long time.

wehateporn 02-22-2017 03:47 AM

It was great for atmosphere and imagination, if you wanted action and fighting, not so much of that. I watched it twice on the big screen

pimpmaster9000 02-22-2017 03:49 AM

hollywood has an "ending" problem...they fuck up the end of the film...it started off so promising but the end was just crap...and so was the alien message they could have gone better ways with this...

nico-t 02-22-2017 04:21 AM

it was one of the most pretentious pieces of shit i have seen.

lets watch a translator doing her job for 2 hours. Holy fuck that was boring.

And then lets put this psychological time travel / future vision personal love story in it, where it's all about her kid and that overrated annoying actor. O and she time travels to convince the chinese guy not to attack the aliens.

The end.

Btw I wonder how many people were stupid / slow enough to be 'surprised' when in the last future scenes untalented hacks Jeremy Renners face was revealed. Ooooh we didn't see that one coming :1orglaugh it was clear it was that guy from the get go and it's being depicted as if the crowd would be too stupid to have figured that out.

Verdict:
Stupid people who like to think they are smart will say this movie is great.
In other words: Pretentious as fuck.

I thought it was great. I was hooked from the beginning to end. Finally a Science Fiction movie that's lets the viewer think, without endless explosions and heroics and other crap.

Good story, good acting, GREAT atmosphere, beautiful photography. There's a reason why its STILL in the theatres despite being released on DVD and VOD the other day.

Great movie.

babeterminal 02-22-2017 08:11 AM

op did not get it, i like some others here watched it twice, great film gets a 10 from len

JohnnyClips - BANNED FOR LIFE 02-22-2017 08:13 AM

I liked the movie

GayGeekGuy 02-22-2017 11:17 AM

I like it a lot!
Good SF movies are rare these days. Most of them just rely on special effects and CGI without focusing on characters or story.

Arrival is a rare example of SF drama with a nonlinear story and without any excessive effects without any meaning behind it.

bronco67 02-22-2017 11:46 AM

Liking or not liking Arrival is a good barometer for your intelligence level -- except in the case of JohnnyClips.

Agreeing with this. Also adding: Over-rated as all hell.

One last thought...

I liked the fact that the movie was pretty much based on "trying to communicate by written language" with the aliens.

OK, fine premise.

However, the aliens were always writing on glass. Fact. So, anybody (the humans) standing on the other side of the glass, would be seeing all the alien's written words BACKWARDS.

So, the humans were learning the alien's written language BACKWARDS and then, displaying the written alien language back to the aliens on computer screens, as the humans learned it, which is backwards. Which means, the humans were responding in complete backwards nonsense and the aliens would not understand and single fucking thing the humans were trying to communicate.

IF the entire premise of the film was the "attempt to communicate thru the written word" with the aliens... THEN HOW COULD THE WRITERS OF THE FILM FUCK UP SUCH A SIMPLE AND BASIC CONCEPT AS 'IF YOU WRITE YOUR LANGUAGE ON PIECE OF GLASS, THE PERSON VIEWING THE LANGUAGE ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE GLASS WILL SEE IT BACKWARDS."

DUH.

LetterTwenty7 02-23-2017 02:54 AM

Ok, so I shouldn't watch it because you or someone else doesn't like it? :D

I am kidding, I've already seen it. It is great! I highly recommend it. There are many great movies. I also watched Lion last night. Stunning! Based on a true story.

Those are pretty smart aliens, the idea is that they would have known what way to put the writing onto the glass, also if the humans held replies the wrong way around, aliens would be smart enough to know :2 cents:

If these aliens were so smart, (which they should be, because they are more advanced than humans) Then, why didn't they take the initiative and 'run the classroom' ? They stood there and let the mice (humans) attempt to teach them.

Wouldn't it be much easier the other way around?

These brilliant aliens could've had the classroom all set up, ready for the mice to learn.

And they never disclosed any issues on backward writing in the film. I think it's a huge flaw.

But those flaws weren't as bad as the film not having an ending, and didn't answer the big questions in the film. Who, how, why? etc... they just took the needle off the record and thought it would be cool to wrap the film early. Mega flaws.

These aliens can see to the future, they knew that their method would work

The film did have a big ending, a huge one, so many surprises, I don't think you understand the ending or else you would not be saying that, I don't want to explain by giving spoilers now to others :2 cents:

How on earth can you describe the movie (or any movie) as pretentious? It's a story about a woman and how she deals with something fantastic, and it's told to the viewer in a way that is different, surprising, and satisfying, at least to sci-fi fans. There's nothing pretentious about this movie.

I get that you didn't like the movie but why did you have to go spoil it for others? Not cool

No! Not the end. I don't think you watched the movie, or, maybe you were bored and didn't pay attention.

Dude you should warn people before you post a spoiler. Like this:

SPOILER ALERT- DON'T READ THIS PARAGRAPH IF YOU DIDN'T SEE THE MOVIE: You know that there were hints all along about Rener's character, right? There is also lots of other foreshadowing. Look at Banks house compared to her class, compared to the alien room. Look at the lamp in her house (the camera sits on it several times). Look at her daughters name (Adams' character even explains it). The symbol for Entropy is highlighted on a whiteboard in another scene. Louise's daughters name is Hannah, which is a palindrome, and she explains it in one scene. Even the hospital's hallways offer a clue. There are so many clues but they are all subtle and only begin to make sense towards the end of the movie. My point is a "surprise" in a movie can be a cheat, if the audience doesn't "feel" it coming. Some movie makers pack their movies with insane detail, or visual tricks, to tell you what's going on (or whats really going on).

No, I think you're getting this wrong. Try not to watch a movie this way. Instead, let the story unfold in the way that the artists want it to unfold. Try not to jump ahead or guess the ending. Let any story flow naturally to you and you will enjoy it much more, I promise.

No dude, wow. It's just a good movie that some people liked. Just because someone liked it doesn't make them smart. Just because someone didn't like it doesn't make them stupid. In an age of Michael Bay-powered 'Splosion movies (which I like too btw), Arrival is a nice, calm, quiet science fiction movie. That's all.

Seriously? Dude you really, really must have nodded off. Try watching it again and you'll get your answer.

Cheers mate.
