Petrol is sold all around Asia like that, it's not an Bali exclusive thing.

I went back for the first time in ten years last year. Previously we would go twice a year for many, but Bali bombing knocked that on the head and we discovered Thailand instead.

Bali is still beautiful and a wonderful place to visit, its a small island with an amazing indigenous locals who practice the very spiritual Balinese Hinduism.

Island is ruled from Indonesia, a predominantly Muslim nation who don't care much for the Balinese and see the islands just as money makers. It's over exploited by the Australian tourists and the dreamers that stay setting up businesses targeting those Australian tourists. Basically Australians catering to Australians using cheap Bali labour ;)

Its still and awesome place to visit, just I'm back to Thailand this year ;)

I used to go regularly for a week at Christmas then a week in Penang Malaysia. Got me away from the cold London weather and the food is great. I stopped when Bali got too popular with the film industry and prices went sky high. Lomboc the sister island to Bali was a far less commercialized island but that was 20 years ago.

I would never go. too many bad stories

I went two times, first time just after the bombing and 7 years ago and liked it. The Gili Islands nearby are great for diving. I always try to avoid high season with all the families. Lombok is/was more quiet. I climbed that mountain on Lombok, i didn't like that. I Think i go for 3 or 6 months beginning of next year and see some more places in Indonesia.
