need a proper standalone player which can be embedded, handles the hosting of the asset as well as processes payment

Have you tried a licensed JWPlayer?

I've had their licensed player for years and had support tickets to fix things and no problem, they absolutely don't care despite their TOS, unless you're peddling stolen content. I've had them yank licenses for two sites that chronically stole my stuff.

We've tried DaCast in the past. It didn't work out for us, but might for you. For Adult, they just block Paypal abilities from your account.

Emailed you back but for anyone else curious:
A year or two ago we had device compatibility problems with them, + the payment workflow in the video player took too long, and even when it was done the user couldn't always log in.

They offer a trial though, so we're going to give them a look again, along with another one or two we tried but eventually passed on:

I can't tell if NicheVid is adult friendly, I look through their terms and don't specifically see porn/adult mentioned. Pricey though. SVP IIRC had no problems with adult, they were just antiquated at the time. They recently updated their player but are also promising VAST/VPAID in the future which makes me want to wait for that. I like the idea of pre/post/overlaid ads on videos if we choose to do some free promos.
