Rogue One "dead actors should not be replicated in CGI IMHO
I watched this StarWars spin off last night and was a little disappointed. Not with the film itself, but with the CGI: Peter Cushing's Grand Moff Tarkin and Carrie Fisher's Princess Leia. To me they looked horrific, the eyes made them look like the walking dead. Its way too early in CGI's history to start trying to replace actors, even dead ones.:1orglaugh

Too early? it has been around since what? the late 80's? It was so impressive i thought they got a look a like for tarkin... I guess when you know all the details before you see the movie it kind or ruins the experience. Part of the reason why i don't wait around to see movies that are this popular. You can ruin any movie that way.
It is used more as a tribute more than anything. Carrie Fisher was still alive when they shot that as well. |
Not gonna ready your full sentence, please no spoils guys!!

As someone who does CG for a living, I'm actually very forgiving of most dodgy CG in movies. But sometimes I feel like there's no excuse for it, given the budget of the film and pedigree of the people working on it. That said, I don't think they did a great job with either of those Cg humans. Peter Cushing was almost cartoonish looking in real life, but the version they created for Rogue One looked like something from a video game cutscene.
Carrie Fisher was freaky looking too. I don't think we're at the place yet where it's fully convincing, but it could have been better. A few years ago there was a commercial with a CG Audrey Hepburn that looked better than Rogue One. Still a good movie though. It really wouldn't have bothered me if they just let Guy Henry (the stand in for the CG) do the job himself. He looks a little like Peter Cushing, and they could have pushed that further with makeup -- and he's also a pretty damn good actor. Ok, back then I thought this looked amazing but standards are higher now. It looks OK maybe when they finally get this stuff right, we can have a buddy western starring John Wayne, Bruce Lee and Elvis. |

I was more disappointed with the ground assault myself. it stopped being star wars and became saving private ryan in space, those soldiers were so obviously made to be as "American G.I." as possible, ruined the whole film for me.

Star wars will never feel like the originals but as a YUGE Star wars fan I am happy they are creating more films!

I saw no issues with the CGI. I thought it was great.
Eventually we'll be using CGI to bring back all kinds of great actors and actresses. Imagine being able to see a new movie with Elvis Presley in it. |

I mean, you see a preview, think it's cool, think "I can't wait to see that!" Then go to the film and that cool shot you saw from the preview is nowhere in the film. Complete and utter bullshit and someone should get a class action lawsuit together to stop this practice. |
