Alexa

Who has Alexa, and what do you do with it? We got a dot last month, and then quickly bought two more. I use them constantly but I am looking for some new things to do with it.

What are you talking about? Link?

The Amazon Echo and Dot. It's like having Siri but without the phone. It's a speaker with a microphone hooked up to the Internet via wifi. You can ask it nearly anything, have it read the news, weather, set alarms, run shopping lists and to do lists, play music, read books... All controlled by voice. You can also have it turn on lights and control the heater, etc, if you buy gear you can connect to it.

Here in the master bedroom I have the smaller one, the dot, and I can connect is to my bluetooth speaker and play any freaking song I want.

I am just wondering what else I can do with it.

Oh hell no, I use it constantly. Right now the one in my office is playing music, Stairway to Heaven. Yes, I can use Apple Music to do this, but it's nice to able to control the music via voice without having to move to another program on my computer.

It's 9am here. I woke up to my Alexa alarm, and used it to read me the news and weather without getting out of bed. Then I told Alexa to connect to my bluetooth speaker in the bathroom where it streamed music - ACDC while I showered. (There is an image for you!) Downstairs I added a few things to my shopping list and also my to do list.

I have a couple of dots and may be ordering another one soon. I have all my main floor lights connected as well as my TV and stereo. I used the Harmony Hub for the TV/stereo and Wemo plugs and switches for my lights. I created two groups so I can turn on all living room lights or all kitchen lights OR ALL lights with a single command.

I say "Alexa turn on sports" and it turns on everything I need to watch ESPN. I can tell it to switch channels, raise or lower the volume. I also have it attached to my alarm via alarm.com so I can lock/unlock doors with voice commands.

ifttt.com has some cool recipes you can use as well.

We use it quite a bit for shopping and todo lists. It would be nice if Alexa could tell you something is already on your list to avoid duplicate items on the list though.

I really like the dot but can't wait until I can hold a conversation so I can string more commands together. Right now it's "Alexa turn on the TV - Alexa turn off the kitchen lights, etc, instead of Alexa, turn on the TV, turn off the lights and lock the back door, and what was the score of the game last night".

However, it is pretty amazing how far voice has come in the last 2-3 years.

although, here in Spain, I canīt connect our laptop to cortana. Seems it only works in the UK or the US, if anyone has further info on this, please speak up :thumbsup

Siri sucks. And while I have an iPhone, I am not an iPhone kind of person and don't use it much

Cortana.... Requires a computer. I don't have a computer in every room.
