Get the Visa debit card for kids

Current launches a Visa debit card for kids that parents control with an app

Want to use a credit card for adult verification?
Want to piss in the wind?

A startup called Current is today launching a new way for parents to dole out allowances to their kids: with an app. The company offers a Visa debit card that would allow teenagers to shop in stores or online using funds from their own bank account, which is funded through allowance money that mom or dad transfers from their own bank account. Parents can use the accompanying mobile app to set chores, track spending, encourage saving and more, allowing kids to learn about money management through practice. ...

... At present, Current isn?t available outside the U.S., but Sopp says plans for expansion are in the works.

?We have been talking to banks in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Germany and the U.K. already, and seems there is a demand,? he says.

That was already never an option, in many countries you can get Visa debit cards starting 13.

Save the children !
They don't even mention 'porn control' blocking in that article.
So all you pundits of the nanny state need to think again.

Credit card age verification is unconstitutional in the USA. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Child_...Protection_Act

There IS one like that in the UK. I made a thread about it ages ago, saying 'Now children have credit cards to purchase porn with' but the intent of my message was missed and everyone suggested I was saying I wanted kids to purchase porn... But there yah go...

The ruling did NOT hold that credit card age verification was unconstitutional, it held that the "community standards" provision was unconstitutional. There is nothing in law prohibiting companies from using a credit card as an age verification for internet purchases.

Such an awful idea. Kids need to develop their personalities and emotional IQ's before learning about overdraft fees and collection calls :D

This is nothing new, my kids who are now adults but have had their own Visa debitcards for many years through Chase and I can see their accounts and transfer money to them but they don't see mine.

Barry-xlovecam 05-10-2017 10:24 AM

To are absolutely wrong Mike.

Prior restraint of speech was the main issue as everyone that is over 18 may not have access to a credit card.

The lawsuit was a constitutional challenge. Private business can debate over your being straight or gay buy your credit card if they want -- but they cannot discriminate based of that conclusion. This has nothing to do with private business (age verification standards).

That is the point --- why age verification by means of a credit card is a bad joke.

322 F.3d 240

Evidence presented to this Court is likely to establish at trial that the implementation of credit card or adult verification screens in front of material that is harmful to minors may deter users from accessing such materials and that the loss of users of such material may affect the speakers' economic ability to provide such communications.

just as we have determined that COPA's affirmative defenses, by requiring the use of a credit card or adult identification number, similarly place an impermissible burden on adult users.

In addition, the District Court found that verification systems may be subject to evasion and circumvention, for example by minors who have their own credit cards.

(03-218) 542 U.S. 656 (2004)
322 F.3d 240, affirmed and remanded.

If anyone is interested -- this applies to US Law only.

My kids all have Greenlight accounts that we recently set up for them.

Visa debit cards included for each. They're 6, 7, 8 and 10...and all learning to manage their money.

My oldest has had a paypal student card linked to my paypal acct for 6 or so years. It was nice being able to just place money on his card when needed. They recently stopped student cards for some reason though.
