I don't understand why the pope who, as a sort of appointed king, runs a private religious organization which has systematically hidden and supported child rapists within it's highest ranks, throughout the world for decades and possibly hundreds of years, and is still going on today without criminal repercussion, is somehow still relevant as a world leader, or someone who's opinion we should honor.

Isn't it customary for a new President to meet with the Pope?

To me it incredibly cheapens his trip to Jerusalem.

I'm not religious, but from my viewpoint it seems Muslims were most important, Jews second, Catholics last.

Trump's is just playing to the world's constituencies. I would not give it too much thought really -- this is Trump's first world tour. "Hi nice to meet you, can I sell you some new planes, tanks, some wonderful bombs or new investments in the US?"

Some believe that the catholic church (Rome) still has great influence over the world if only through their massive financial holdings.

The reason is simple. Yes, the Catholic church has done and is still doing some terrible things including abusing kids and then helping cover it up. Even with all that nastiness, there are about 70 million Catholics in the US and about 1.2 billion worldwide so the Pope has an incredible amount of influence over a very large number of people. When you are that powerful, the President meets with you.

Makes sense in terms of why they met, of course. My other question is why do people who are not catholic make such a big deal about his opinions? Obviously one can observe them in terms of the influence that they have in the Catholic Church, but I have heard so many non-catholics seeming to take what he says on climate change or economics or geopolitics as such a big deal.... That's mainly the part that I don't understand.

Then again, I don't understand why people pay attention to actors or celebrities when they give out similar opinions....
