Portland has an appropriation problem.

There?s really nothing special about opening a Mexican restaurant?it?s probably something that happens everyday. But the owners of Kooks Burritos all but admitted in an interview with Willamette Week that they colonized this style of food when they decided to ?pick the brains of every tortilla lady there in the worst broken Spanish ever.?

The ?they? she was referring to were probably the Mexican ?abuelitas? these two women preyed upon in order to appropriate the secrets of their livelihood. Suitably impressed, these tourists began asking the locals questions about how these tortillas were made. ?They told us basic ingredients,? Connelly said, adding ?[but] they wouldn't tell us too much about technique.? Hmmm. Wonder why? This is where things go from quirky to predatory if you haven?t already guessed.

??We were peeking into window of every kitchen, totally fascinated by how easy they made it look,? she said. So let?s recap the story thus far: These two white women went to Mexico, ate tacos, and then decided they would just take what the locals clearly didn't want to give them. If that wasn't bad enough, they decided to pack up all their stolen intellectual property and repackage it in one of the few places where such a business could plausibly work: Portland, Oregon.

While describing themselves on their Yelp biography (which has since been edited), Connelly claims to have ?a mean tortilla flip? while Wilgus anointed herself as the ?director of vibes? and ?our little abuelita with recipes from the heart??even though the recipes were stolen.

Week after week people of color in Portland bear witness to the hijacking of their cultures, and an identifiable pattern of appropriation has been created. Several of the most successful businesses in this town have been birthed as a result of curious white people going to a foreign country, or an international venture, and poaching as many trade secrets, customs, recipes as possible, and then coming back to Portland to claim it as their own and score a tidy profit. Now don?t get me wrong: cultural customs are meant to be shared. However, that?s not what happens in this city.

Because of Portland?s underlying racism, the people who rightly own these traditions and cultures that exist are already treated poorly. These appropriating businesses are erasing and exploiting their already marginalized identities for the purpose of profit and praise.

Wrong. Wendy's Restaurant here in America. I grew up across the bridge from Portland, in Vancouver Washington, and all racists go-to Wendy's Restaurant even back then. Wendy's even tweeted out a custom Pepe meme.

They actually visited a place to learn about what they wanted to do unlike what many would do. They watched others do what they wanted to do. No where does anything say they slipped in the backdoor of a kitchen and stole recipes. They went to learn and they utilized what they learned. It's Portland. It's a cool place to live, but we do have some craziness. Not too long ago the city of Portland had new training for all teachers on how to not be racist when they teach. One of the examples was a math problem that said: "If Billy has three peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and he gives one to Sally, how many will he have left?" They said the question was racist because there might be kids in the class who are from cultures where sandwiches are not a typical food so they could be offended by it.

last week i ate at a small new thai restaurant that had opened up near me. It tasted like they had a thai cook making it, authentic and really delicious.

The owner who is also the cook came out for a talk after, it was a dutch white guy. He lived in thailand for years and started getting interested in the thai kitchen when he was there. When he came back to live in Holland again he eventually opened up this place. This guy was very passionate, the way he talked you could tell he was doing what he really loved to do.

What's comical to me about this is that if you go into just about any restaurant in the city no matter what type of food it is, half the cooks in the kitchen will likely be Mexican. So people are up in arms that a couple of white girls were making tacos, but if they go out for Asian food, or Italian, French, or pretty much anything, the odds are pretty good it was not made by a person of that ethnicity.
