Do you prefer organic fruit/veg?

I prefer my own. I put a greenhouse out in the back and we grow our own carrots, potatoes, peas, beans, lettuce, etc. all year round. Pretty neat walking through the snowdrifts and shoveling a path to the greenhouse and you walk inside and it's like a tropical zone.

Fruit is a bit tougher, but we have a couple of kiwi vines, a couple of apple trees "trained" to grow horizontally like a vine, grape vines etc. inside the greenhouse.

The hardest part is finding the right seeds/seedlings that are not GMO, same with fertilizers and soil.

Overall, it's by no means cheaper than just going to the grocery store. And it's more of an interest i have in growing our own food than it is on the debates surrounding healthiness of the GMO stuff. The one thing I can control, however, is that there's no pesticide used -- at all -- which is the one thing appealing to me.

Generally speaking, we try to avoid meat that has antibiotics and hormones in it as well. But that can be difficult at times around here. If I had the land, and the patience/skillset to rear and process my own beef, poultry and pork, I would.

It depends on the grower...not all pesticides are bad...but I definitely prefer my own grow...

Jane BongaCash 05-26-2017 08:30 AM

Nope, I don't see a difference. :banana

I'm no advocate of it in general as it is more often than not a marketing gimmick full of deception, but I can't lie, it tends to normally taste better, especially the local outlets around here. Ideally i would like to grow my own stuff but it is far too time consuming for me these days, i'm just not home enough in the summer.

If you ever get a chance to eat potatoes from Prince Edward Island, I assure you, there is nothing even close to it.

Yes, mostly organic, especially berries and apples which suck in pesticides. Grass fed beef chicken and pork as well.....

If you haven't tasted the Grass Fed difference try out Butcher Box and get free bacon with your first order!

Yellow fleshed and Yukon Gold are my two favorite varieties. Extremely tasty. And no one does Russets like PEI... awesome for baking and roasting, and certainly the best potato for french fries.

Yes it is always better to have it in your ground because even if organic supplier does everything 100% eco, he need to mass produce in order to make money, and quality is going down when there is mass production.

It's very hard to find organic fruits and veggies these days but I prefer organic fruits. There is a big taste difference between organic and non-organic fruits. Also, non-organic fruits and veggies are bigger and resist more in the fridge or just on my kitchen table.

Also, let's define "organic". Cause if I plant in my garden some seeds of tomatoes, seeds that came from a non-organic plant, it doesn't mean that plant is organic even if I want to. If the first seed that I plant is already genetic modified, then it isn't that organic as we think.

So yes, I prefer organic. Whenever I find farmers who sell apples or veggies from their gardens, I prefer to buy from them because they have a tradition - they are 70-80 year old and still work in gardens so they know how to take care of the soil and what they produce.

people look at me like i am crazy when i gush over a damn potato variety but it truly is different. When i first moved down here in southern ontario they were somewhat available in markets and i couldn't get enough of them. I didn't realize the difference until we had a few years where most markets switched to idaho potatoes instead. Man, i know idaho is known for potatoes as well but there is truly no comparison. At least not the varieties i was getting. Must be something in the rocky soils of the island.
