(CNN)In a case that hinged largely on a teenage couple's intimate text messages, Michelle Carter was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter Friday in the 2014 death of her boyfriend, who poisoned himself by inhaling carbon monoxide in his pickup truck, a Massachusetts judge ruled.

Carter's own words -- preserved in hundreds of text messages presented as evidence over six days of testimony -- helped seal her conviction in the death of 18-year-old Conrad Roy III, Bristol County Juvenile Court Judge Lawrence Moniz said during a 15-minute explanation of his rationale.
"She admits in ... texts that she did nothing: She did not call the police or Mr. Roy's family" after hearing his last breaths during a phone call, Moniz said. "And, finally, she did not issue a simple additional instruction: Get out of the truck."
Carter, 20, cried silently as Moniz spoke. She stood to receive the ruling, which could set legal precedent for whether it's a crime to tell someone to commit suicide.

all of my old boyfriends committed suicide without overt prompting thankfully

for real though so sad on a couple of levels. not just at the loss of life but that someone could participate so enthusiastically in the process

This judicial decision is remarkable! I hope it will set a precedent for cases of school bullying that push some youngsters to commit suicide. :2 cents:

He committed suicide a few miles from my residence. She encouraged him to get back in the car and do it. He'd tried before and they felt he'd try again.

She has no moral character and needs ten years in Bridgewater State Hospital. She's in need of intense therapy.

"Say it and forget it. Write it and regret it."

A simple call could have prevented this. Fairhaven Police is nearby.

She cries now. Tears were absent as she listened to him gasp for air, then die.

They were meant to be. Hopefully she joins him soon.

She deserves jail time.

But no useful therapy in prison. She'll come out just as fucked up. At BSH she's a prisoner with no freedom or visitors. Just mental therapy to try to straighten her out.

I was told today she broke no laws. "Free speech" was the reason. No law in this commonwealth states you have to help a suicidal person. Morally she's guilty but legally she's not. At first I didn't agree and I still don't, but which law did she break?

I'm still convinced she allowed him to kill himself. She encouraged him. If no law exists, they need to write one.

shit judgement. it sets the precedent that, if a couple fight, & one says to the other "kill yourself!" & if he/she does, suddenly they are liable for 20 years time. its meaningless that this case is egregious. it can be applied to anything now.

He was sick, she was sick. she was 30 fucking miles away. she didnt throw him back in the car. he did it himself.

WTF happened to personal responsibility in this country?
