Jays XXX Links Nightmare
 

I have I crisis which I am trying to resolve at the moment:

On Thursday, April 10th I was leaving to start a tour with my band (www.dickdelicious.com) a few hours before I left I went to do some work on my sites when I couldn?t get on the server. I called my hosting company and they told me that my server had been hacked and all of my sites have been destroyed. The timing on this could not have been worse.

The webhost was supposed to be running monthly backups, but had failed to do so, and there is A LOT of my stuff that was done either on Homsite or the pages had been generated by script. It?s a lot their fault for not providing adequate protection / backups and I am also partially to blame for not backing up enough on my end.

I will be working around the clock to get my sites back online, and if we?ve done some type of link trade that you don?t see on there anymore ? it?s not because I?ve screwed you ? it?s because of this issue and I will get your link back up ASAP!

What really sux is I was just really starting to make some serious bank when this shit hit...FUCK!

Everyone submits sites or has listings - I am attempting to salvage the latest versions of my pages from the Google cache and my local files. There is a stong possibility that I may (at some point) restart the whole fucking project (2 years of work)

I am attempting to get traffic back quicly as posssible, and to add insult to injury - I did great on this last google update - SO THIS REALLY SUX. Plus, I will be one of the few webmasters that will reveal what I acually earn per day - which is somewhere between 300-400 dallars. 250 on a low and 500 on a high. Multiply that by 12 days of downtime and you see my problem.

good luck restoring your sites

You likely should have invested in an automatic backup system, as well as multiple servers, and multiple locations for nameservers.. There's not too much of an excuse for that, except maybe that you were so happy and involved in your work - which is a good excuse ... I guess this is a lesson for ya if anything. :(

I know how easy it is to let these small things slip. Hopefully the Google Cache can help you out and/or the Internet Archive (archive.org).

To All Comments - Yes, making more backups is something I need to do more of in the future. I will change hosyts eventaully - they are trying to work with me now to bail me out - a new contact just is not going to do that. If you want to add isult to injury, read this tour diary:

Hey everybody - I have started getting back on my feet. I have most of my sites back up in a skeletal form, at least.

A lot of pages I had rescue from the Google cache, so there may be link trades that some of you guy did with me that got lost in the mix. I will honor all trades. If you think you have a trade that is missing, hit me at [email protected] and I will get to them as soon as I can.

I am working with two other people round the clock to get up and running again. I am sorry for the inconvience it may have caused some of you.

It seems that my problems were caused by an incompetent network administrator who wiped out my whole box. I am in the process of implementing a backup system where I will be able to be up and running within 48 hours, so we will not have to endue this again!

Dude, that hella sucks... I've had my webhost give me a bullshit excuse like "the server crashed, the data can't be restored" before... Hmm, actually that sounds exactly what I had happen a couple years back with Allwebsites. Turned out they had some kind of scuffle with their upstream provider and had to take all their shit offline for a week to change datacenters, without bothering to tell anyone first. Funny, haven't heard anyone talk about them since then. Fucking Bastards.

Damn sweet!!! I'm looking forward to be making that kind of money dude.

Yea... I was gonna say... hackers don't normally come in and just wipe your box out... Theres not much they could gain from that unless you really pissed somone off. Has your host offered to make any concessions?

Yup, they like to lie to their customers and pull shit out of their asses to cover their fuckups. Exactly what they did to me... who knows how many times they've done this.

On the record:
The 4 major downtimes during my reign were due to mis-management and bad decisions made by DC.


Ethics:
I have no remorse in airing my dirty AWS laundry.
And not because DC bashed me all the time;
And not because he never paid me on time;
And not because he still owes me almost $10k;
It is because he fucked me on taxes. March 03 he decided to change my w2 to a 1099 for half of 02. So yay for me and the $5k I owe in taxes. DC is the devil. He has NO ethics. He's only looking out for himself and his on/off girlfriend.


Shortly after I left in Feb 03, the new admin tore through systems and killed all the automation scripts. DC immediately blamed me for all their problems. I helped the admin repair most of the crap he broke while "securing" the systems.


At the end of March, DC left me a long phone message, telling me he let the first admin go and asking me to help the two new admins. It seems very comical since just a few days before that, he raped me with the surprise 1099.


I am just another name on the long list of people that DC and AWS has fucked.
