Heres a bump for more answers

Create loads of vidoes that are totally unique with unique descriptions and page content.
Get millions of people to watch, like and share those videos.
Watch your rankings rise.

Don't do it! Its against Google's webmaster guidelines. You can end up wasting your money since, in the past, Google has de-indexed PBNs. Many people ended up with hundreds of, now, worthless domains.

I'd stay away from that.

Test for yourself and do not trust 100% in what Google says.

I think it is still possible however it will be required much more work. For example, before it was enough to buy 100 domains, just put nothing on but a link to your moneysite, and that's it. If you do that now, it will be actually give negative seo as if you have backlink from site which is not rich in content then it's counted as negative link. So, it would be possible if you would make 100 sites with content but that is way way toomuch work.

You have to test them to learn ;)

Similar but instead of 100 domains.. reg one domain and create 100 sub.domains linked to your main domain and sitemap. Then, get links to your 100 sub.domains

I know people still buy hard links bot in direct form or via paid 'guest posts' but my question was more in terms of what people can do ALL ON THEIR OWN when it comes to adult SEO

If you're basically making splogs, then no.
If you're making them by hand, taking the time to find/crop nice images, make fun to read articles with value, posting them in relevant places and trade links with similar sites/article links, etc. then they do well.
