The electric car race in Montreal was a financial failure

I read Le journal 24 and it appears that for the local businesses it was a failure. Restaurants were close to empty and other establishments have reported similar. They're all claiming that the 3 weeks of hell the city put them through getting ready for the event wasn't worth it because they've all lost money.

So another failure for the electric car

This was this past weekend ? :Oh crap

Joshua G 07-31-2017 09:12 AM

love how the liberal left only shows up to oppress free speech, vandalize property, beat people up, & burn the flag. show up to support electric cars? nope.

dumb libs.

Well it would appear that the electric car is going to be hard to sell and looks like it's only going to appeal to a certain niche.

As for Montreal....
This city really has been pushing these events and festivals for years instead of getting a real economy. Government hasn't heard of Internet and how today many people would rather just sit at home instead of going to a concert, event, etc. It was destined to fail and all the merchants knew it but no one in city hall would listen.

At all levels Quebec's government and institutions are incompetent at best and half-ass at worst.

The idea of racing electric cars will sound silly to most people.
Most people don't think they are fast for one thing.
Also, racing without engine noise is silly to most people.

Finally, how long is a pit stop to refuel? :1orglaugh

Choopa Phil 07-31-2017 02:27 PM

They already have electric car races. Children do it with RC cars

2MuchMark 07-31-2017 02:38 PM

That does it! I'm selling my EV and buying a nice old '57 V8. Sure hope it takes lots of leaded gas! Yee Har!

Gunk sells a lead substitute and I'm glad to read that you're starting to embrace common sense.

Electric cars are only going to be a "Niche" in the foreseeable future. What's going to really hit the market are self-driving cars. Personally I'm hoping that big oil pushes back against them because people who own their own cars will always use far more gas than a fleet of "pay per ride" cars will.

It will take time, for sure. There are a lot of people who see a car with a 200-300 mile range and the first thing they think is, "Well, I can't drive that car when I take a vacation somewhere." Of course, most of these people have driven a long way just a few times in a handful of years maybe even in their lives so that isn't really a worry, but they will still need to see that this isn't a real barrier.

I think, within the next 20 years, we will have a lot of self-driving electric cars on the roads.

Self-driving cars will be too smart to use fossil fuels, old timer. The future is electric. I suggest you pull over an and let the future pass you before it runs you over.

.

You can call me an old timer...
you can say I'm a luddite....
You can even claim I'm "scared" of the technology and change...

But the future is Aldous Huxley and I'll argue we're already living in a dystopian world

I know a few things about technology because when I was a child my parents still bought gramophone records. I've had 45s, LPs, 8 tracks, etc. Back in the 70s some of "old timers" we're already trying to digitize and transmit smut using the "Internet" so we wouldn't get caught smuggling it across the border or on sex tourism. Honestly none of this shit has made the world any better.

When electric self-driving cars become the norm you can kiss freedom of any kind goodbye. The establishment is going to know where you are... where you're going.. who you're seeing... etc. Plus there's going to be so much unemployment that guaranteed Welfare will be the norm and that means if you don't kiss the establishment's asshole you won't eat or live indoors.

So if you really want to do the world some good... Go back to the horse and buggy.

That's not a fair nor accurate statement.

Digitizing porn in the 80's and early 90's lead to the explosion of porn and porn business we have today, created lots of new wealth and even social networks like GFY, that you and I are talking on today. And of course the underlying technology of the Internet has made the world much better. We connect with each other, we do business, we see the world in ways that were impossible just 25 years ago.

How some people have used this technology on the other hand, is evil. That I will of course give you. Don't blame the tech, blame the people who use it for nastiness.

Umm... you do have a smartphone, right? Google, your phone company and their advertisers already know where you are, where you hang out, etc.

Exchanging privacy for convenience is topic best suited for another debate, but yeah, this happened a long time ago. No smart-car necessary for that.

Haha um, no. Horses are too slow, and consume way too much energy to get from here to there, and produce too much waste and require way too much maintenance. Buggy's are uncomfortable and ugly and won't go that far before requiring maintenance too (like a new wheel). I get your point, but come on.

All stupid crap-talk aside, the Formula-E race in Montreal was a great idea.

Yes it could have been planned better but the event was a perfect showcase for Quebec's green energy programs and electric cars in general. And anyone who knows their car history, car races are a huge boon to the car industry.

The Forumula E races are sanctioned by the same body as that of the F1 race - Paris-based Fédération internationale de l’automobile, and adds Montreal to the list of exotic cities like Hong Kong, Marrakech, Buenos Aires, Paris, and Berlin.

The race also brought over 20 million viewers world-wide.

Was it perfect? No, but instead of bitching about it like a whiny old "bring back the good-old days" grandpa, ideas should be considered to make it an even better race next year, and the year after that.

And if you can't or won't, don't complain anyway - someone else will do it for you.

Nope I can honestly say we discuss the bomb instead of computers.

Also no new jobs were created by automation... It was market diversification and demand for cheap throw away crap that created new jobs. The problem is that today's automation is saturating the market's needs and no one is producing anything different.

Plus governments and corporations (aka. The Establishment) have gone absolutely hog fucking stupid with surveillance. The Establishment has always seen us as necessary evil to create wealth and power. It's also paranoid that one day we might not need them so they use technology to keep us drunk on fear and hope with the occasional brainwashing dream displayed on a screen.

Oh boy, guess we better cancel the future then. Expert and proponent of fossil fuel notinmybackyard has proclaimed that burning shit from the ground is the only way forward -- just like all the other people close to dying think. I'm just going to assume you're an old-ass bitch.

Who sits around wanting energy sources that are alternatives to dirty fossil fuels to not succeed? Old assholes who have maybe a couple of good years left...that's who. I guess if something doesn't make money right now, then it's worthless. I'm putting aside the fact that you just cherry picked one story like it means something in the broad scope of successes or failures in clean energy.

Did someone make a Revenge Of The Nerds 5?
Or did the 1980's call and want their idealism back?

This entire electric car thing is so 1980s Generation X that it might sell better if Boy George was hired as its spokesperson.

Here's something you don't want to know and that is it takes 3 barrels of crude oil to make 1 solar panel and the technological grid needed to support it is a toxin nightmare built by slave labor and children mining the minerals for the chips.

Businesses probably did poorly because it the race route and traffic diversions made it harder to get to those bars and restaurants.

Formula 1 races in Montreal are on their own track, with the parties held on Crescent street, one of the most popular dining and clubbing streets in Montreal.

Trying to somehow attach the slow business of bars & restaurants on a single, poorly planned race to electric cars in general is super lazy of you, and only goes to display your extreme confirmation bias against electric cars and change in general.

Electric cars and hybrids are 2 different things. Watching the race is fun if you like racing (I don't particularly), and races are important as they can serve as hard tests of emerging technologies.

LOL: Today more people have more access to porn, and today anyone can make porn and learn to profit from it. Expensive complicated cameras are replaced with cheap and easier to use cameras. Expensive film editing machines are replaced with editing software, etc.

You don't think that "the industry" has been made better by the Internet, but you're looking at this the wrong way. The way that you used to make porn, is no longer an interesting option, to anyone or even now to you. It's too expensive, too slow, and almost all the porn theatres are gone, right? Instead of crying about the long-gone old days, why not embrace the new? Surely a man of your creative genius can take advantage of all these modern tools to create a masterpiece of "smut", no?

Well that is your choice. Get outside and away from your computer. Go have a pint with your friends. or take a walk in a park or forest somewhere. Consider adopting a pet. Computers are great but they will suck your time away from you if you let them. Don't reply to this. Instead, leave your house for a while. It's a nice day today.

Cheers!

First, prove it. Post a link to that information here please because I would like to read it.

Next, a typical solar panel pays for itself within 2 years of its carbon cost, as of 2015, meaning all the energy it produces after that is "free". In 2017, new technologies such as solar tiles, use alot less materials and energy during the production phase.

To BUILD them, maybe. Solar panels are made with a stew of toxic chemicals, but then again so is your phone, computer, car and even your home.

To SUPPORT it however is another story. Gas and oil require manufacturing, transportation via trains and pipelines, and storage underground (for gas stations). There are so many possibilities for disasters with gas and oil and disasters happen daily with this form of energy, causing an obscene amount of pollution. How many disasters have there been thanks to Solar panels?

Who's crying? I made my money and I continue to do so. However I'm an old codger and the fact is that I go to bed every night knowing that there's a good chance I might not wake up in the morning. It's a fact of life that all of us get old and all of us eventually will meet our maker.

So the reason I'm on here the Internet is because I've got nothing better to do. It's also the reason I continue to make my small contribution to my local smut industry. It gives me something to do without any kind of commitments so that I can bugger off to go fishing with one of my kids or babysit my one of my great-grandchildren.

I've made the bulk of my money from a porn industry that offered more than $2.00 commission for each porn membership sold or a .05˘ click thru. And this is what it comes down to.... You can talk about technology and the availability to make porn and watch porn with a keystroke. BUT I've actually had Sturman hand me a suitcase of money and tell me to make him a movie.

I call bullshit on this. Prove to me that you did anything like this.

Allow me to clairfy exactly what "my role" was.

If you notice I wrote "Hook Ups." What I was asked for was the broads to either get someone laid or setup. Now what the jizz biz does extremely well is gossip. The talk at the time was about certain people attempting to transport porn electronically instead of physically. Several of those people wanted hook ups from me. So you do the math.

Cheers!

Do you think I don't?? Just the same I'm not capable of staging a hotrod race in my backyard every single day. I really only can do that once every couple of months and I only host a swinger's party about once a month.

However my hobby is sitting on my front porch with a garden hose spraying young punks that step on my lawn because it's easier than shaking my fist at them. (arthritis don't you know)

Buddy I think that you're just a depressed fellow looking to put others into the same mindset as yourself for some reason. That's too bad. I hope you feel better soon.

Because I still lend him money I'll never get back. But I've got a lot less days ahead of me than I do behind me so I'm not too concerned.

My grandson is an over-educated bum. Albeit he's a very lovable bum but a bum nonetheless.

I think you should do this when you die. Your life will finally have had a purpose.

Fuck no.. The last time I was depressed was when Joplin died.

As for text driven impressions I get the idea that you're a tall 80s' throw back that's probably awkward around people in the real world. But this is just text so I only know what you tell me.

Why? It's not like Boy George died or someone good like that...

Your memory is going. You already had that impression of me, and already said it. And if you recall, I confirmed that I'm a quiet person, but in no way awkward.

You think about me too much.

One day we will meet in person. Buy me a beer and get to know me. You'll like me, I'm awesome! Just ask Baddog, Vendzilla, and of course, JoshuaMo..

By the way: I read this, and thought of you:Study: Batteries and clean energy will outcompete fossil fuels by 2020

Absolutely. I actually get the feeling that we would really get along. But I'm sure we wouldn't agree on a single thing at all.

Fuck the beer... I make my own whisky!

I brew single malt (of course). I use rye, barely, wheat and corn and I use birch barrels. Oh and I've got a fair amount that's been nicely maturing since 1979 according to my secret recipe. So I'll bring a nice big bottle.

Warning... When I drink I like to get into fights and fondle women I don't know. Especially women with really big tits and big asses.

What I do when I drink is too inappropriate to say on GFY.
