They have to Target the kids while they're young and still impressionable. Teach them about obesity and diabetes and turn them into stigmatas

While 61% may be high, is it really a terrible idea to tax things like this? They tax booze, cigarettes, pot, pretty much anything bad for you. Sugar is something that, in excess, can be very damaging to a person. Why not have a sin tax on it? So long as the money goes to something good, which likely isn't the case here.

It will never work. They just create a black market. Or people will just drive out of county for it and all of the money flows to the surrounding counties.. And then they are left trying to find another way to pay the bills. The state is bankrupt. The city of Chicago is likely beyond.

I'm sure some people will drive out of the county for it if they are close to the edge of the county, but do you really think people living in Chicago are going to take the time to deal with traffic to drive out of the county and back again just to save a couple of dollars on soda tax?

Bladewire 08-03-2017 06:33 PM

That's bullshit make your own soda you can get the kit on Amazon. Taxes like that are fucked up.

Yes.. They will just stock up on the runs.

Cook County's long-delayed tax on sweetened beverages took effect Wednesday amid confusion, leaving retailers grumbling and shoppers plotting soda runs to neighboring counties.

GAMEFINEST 08-03-2017 06:39 PM

Chicago is no joke

CoolMikey 08-03-2017 07:26 PM

It's bullshit, they tax any beverage that is sweetened.

"any nonalcoholic beverage, carbonated or noncarbonated, which is intended for human consumption and contains any caloric sweetener or noncaloric sweetener, and is available for sale in a bottle or produced for sale through the use of syrup and/or powder."

So everything from chocolate milk to iced tea to sports drinks to even lightly flavored water, etc.

CoolMikey 08-03-2017 07:29 PM

And there is a bullshit catch too:

"Drinks bought by families in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program won't be slapped with the additional tax, as it violates federal law."

So the group of people that consume most unhealthy beverages will not be effected by this new tax in any way.

Only democrats could have come up with this nonsense. :1orglaugh

ALL foodstamp money will now be spent on sodas and they will return to their neighborhood and sell it for cash. And then you'll have the cops gunning them down in the streets for selling untaxed sodapop. :1orglaugh

I love how they add the county tax as a top line item. They don't tax it, but it should all go in the tax area.

MrMaxwell 08-04-2017 09:59 AM

I don't think that they applied the 10.25% tax to the tax
Meanwhile we'll have soda pop end up being like cigarettes
From what I have read you can now catch more hell out east for running tobacco product than you can running actual proda
Fucking unreal
Demotrash
Prohibition didn't work on this

"Everyone has to pay it, whether you make $100,000 per year or $20,000 per year," said Bucktown resident Chris Schluter as he walked out of Aldi carrying a half-gallon of chocolate milk, which isn't subject to the tax.

They made it sound like any sweetened beverage is taxed extra. I guess there are random loop holes for chocolate milk and other stuff, that makes it so much better, so much easier to make good informed decisions when you don't even know what is taxed extra or what isn't. :error

MrMaxwell 08-04-2017 11:30 AM

Some dumbass should make a soda pop where you add the sugar yourself or something

There's a make your own soda pop machine someone sells

Some idiot could make soda pop and sell it

Or just put "Not for human consumption! Same exact formula as before is now available for your pets!" on the label, since the tax only applies to:

"any nonalcoholic beverage, carbonated or noncarbonated, which is intended for human consumption and contains any caloric sweetener or noncaloric sweetener, and is available for sale in a bottle or produced for sale through the use of syrup and/or powder."

It will be so hilarious when some manufacturer does that and scores ton of free publicity out of it. :1orglaugh
