It wasn't a kidnapper, it was someone who rear-ended a car.

I did something like this once when I was in college. I was the first car at a red light and this four door car in the other opposite direction slammed into the car in front of him - backed up, and then pulled away. I was driving an RX7 at the time. They knew they were being followed; They suddenly stopped in the middle of a country road and four large Mexicans got out. This was before the time of cell phones. I backed up a bit and someone came up behind me and they had a cell phone. Cops were there a minute later, arrested all of them.
