He never recovered from the whole jumping on the Oprah couch thing. But II can separate the actor from the kook. There's only one Tom Cruise. Imagine any movie he's in, and someone else playing his part. You can't do it.

Val Kilmer and Patrick Swayze in Top Gun. Might be awesome in it's own way, but it won't be Top Gun.

Haven't liked anything he's in for years.
