Black or African-American?

There was a major disagreement among several CNAs today. Which is correct, black or African-American, was the subject.

I grew up hearing about colored people and we had friends of my parents come over for dinner. My folks belonged to the NAACP. They were darker than us but otherwise, just normal people. Then the word became negroes. That was bastardized to ni**ers. It changed to black and was accepted for decades. Now it's African-American.

Do you have a preference, if you're uhh not white? If you're white, what's your preferred word?

I'm American. Not Russian-American (mom's family traced back to the early 1800's), Polish-American (the same on my father's side) and not Jewish-American (religion, not race).

I'm curious what others say.

African-American = someone born in Africa that immigrated to the US and became a US citizen. Interestingly, Africans and African-Americans don't think too highly of black Americans and often don't even consider them to be black.

Black = American with a significant percentage of African genetics. Almost all black Americans have white DNA in their biological ancestry. Which is why black Americans usually do not have the same skin tones as "real blacks" in Africa.

I'm Irish American and my grandfather was Italian American :2 cents:

A lot of blacks don't identify as African American because their ancestors and/or family aren't from Africa :2 cents:

Not all blacks are African American

They are all our brothers and sisters

ErectMedia 08-16-2017 09:51 PM

My grandfather would say Colored Guy, not sure that would go over well anymore. :winkwink:

I don't know any way people that refer to themselves as just white. If you ask anyone else where they come from they always have a country in Europe or Beyond where they come from.

Part of being American is we all literally immigrated from other countries at some point.

Blacks call themselves different things just like whites do. Very simple

i would say black american fit perfectly because when african-american used ,you need to substitute white american with euro american ? am i wrong ? which is not much of insult but does mean it's not their motherland.

No it's not changing.

The only thing your hate is doing is marginalizing your little Klan of broken people and weakening your "movement"

Hannes 08-17-2017 11:55 AM

" Just call them hahahahahahas " - exactly what starts racism. The reporter who's white, didn't say a thing about race, yet the black man assumes she's racist. Only racists see racism where there is non.
