Trump pardons former Sheriff Joe Arpaio

Trump pardons former Sheriff Joe Arpaio

Washington (CNN)President Donald Trump has pardoned controversial former sheriff Joe Arpaio of his conviction for criminal contempt, the White House said Friday night.

Arpaio, who was a sheriff in Maricopa County, Arizona, was found guilty of criminal contempt last month for disregarding a court order in a racial profiling case. Arpaio's sentencing had been scheduled for October 5.
"Not only did (Arpaio) abdicate responsibility, he announced to the world and to his subordinates that he was going to continue business as usual no matter who said otherwise," wrote US District Judge Susan Bolton in the July 31 order.
Trump indicated he would pardon Arpaio at a rally in Phoenix, Arizona, on Tuesday: "I won't do it tonight because I don't want to cause any controversy."
"I'll make a prediction," Trump said, adding, "I think he's going to be just fine."
However, civil rights groups have pushed back against the possibility of Arpaio's pardon.
After Trump's comments at the Phoenix rally, the ACLU tweeted: "President Trump should not pardon Joe Arpaio. #PhoenixRally #noarpaiopardon," accompanied with a graphic that reads, "No, President Trump. Arpaio was not 'just doing his job.' He was violating the Constitution and discriminating against Latinos."

The only way the legal system can operate is if law enforcement officials do what the courts tell them. Judges don?t carry guns or enforce their own orders. That?s the job of law enforcement.

In the end, the only legally binding check on law enforcement is the authority of the judiciary to say what the law is -- and be listened to by the cops on the streets.

When a sheriff ignores the courts, he becomes a law unto himself. The courts? only available recourse is to sanction the sheriff. If the president blocks the courts from making the sheriff follow the law, then the president is breaking the basic structure of the legal order.
I'll just leave this here

I'll have to use that excuse when I go before the judge to contest a speeding ticket.
It's a liberal witch hunt against me your honor so I don't have to do what you say or obey the speed limits

Obama and crew weren't happy enough in taking his job so they drummed up some BS charges. The man spent 55 years in various forms of government service only to be pissed on by the Obama admin.

Arpaio had every right to bust illegal beaners. The buck stops with Trump, luckily. And he wasn't going to allow activist judges to get away with it.

If they started pulling white people over and making them prove their citizenship then there would be a massive out cry. But since it's beaners some who have served the country with honor...it's ok to harass them and make them prove they were born here and having a valid id isn't proof enough

Soros spends $2 million to defeat Arpaio

What most uninformed douche's such as yourself don't know is an elected sheriff has more power than anyone who is within their county, even federal officers. He threatened to arrest federal officers who tried to impose federal laws within his county. Most metropolitan areas have been federalized and the police are unelected federal extensions. They couldn't control him so they took him out and put someone in that they could. And to make sure he stayed quiet they slapped him with a ridiculous charge.

The Sheriffs department and the police dept in my town hate each other. In fact the police aren't even allowed inside of the jails here. They enter into a garage and hand off the detainee's to the sheriffs.

Oh and BTW Trump didn't even know all of this was going on until very recently. So what does this tell you about what's really going on in the White House? Why do you think he's just now stepping in? You really don't want to know how he ended up finding out about it.

I thought of that, but why didn't he announce it at his "rally" in Phoenix on Wednesday? Why did he wait until Friday?

kmanrox 08-26-2017 11:41 PM

Personally I think Trump should have let Arprio go to court where he probably would not have gotten jail time. This way Trump's detractors can't cry 'racist'.

Trump obstructed justice by pardoning Arprio before he was sentenced. The judicial branch of government was obstructed by Trump's premature executive branch pardon.

An unforgiveable pardon for Sheriff Joe

"Mr Trump and his cheerleaders have a different explanation for Sheriff Joe?s pardon. The authoritarian showman is being pardoned, the president has signalled, because he did nothing wrong in the eyes of ?patriots? who know how police powers should really be used. That is not an act of grace. It is an act of nullification by stealth: the highest office-holder in the land saying that legal checks and balances are so much politically correct nonsense."

"In 2011 Mr Arpaio assigned a five-member ?cold-case posse?, financed by conservatives across the country, to investigate whether Barack Obama had faked evidence of his birth in America (the sheriff argued that Mr Obama had indeed faked his birth certificate, making him an early ally of Mr Trump, who used the racially charged ?birther? conspiracy to launch his own career in nativist politics)."

Chump asked Sessions if there was a way he could stop/prevent the trial before it began. He sure loves to obstruct justice

He's warming up and setting the tone for when he starts pardoning those around him

He said at the rally he was going to pardon the crooked and convicted sheriff, but wasn't going to announce the actual pardon there because of the uproar it would cause. He showed class and did it during a hurricane

It isn't red meat for his base as much as it is a signal to Flynn and Manafort to "hang tight as I have your back". Mueller is trying to flip both. Trump pardoning a political loyalist, don't think for a second Sheriff Joe was not a seriously bad person, is a sign to them to not flip on Trump. It will be controversial when he pardons one or both, but not enough that the balless GOP will do anything about it.

When the book of damage to the U.S. is written this will be a big chapter. :2 cents:

It sure will considering even Manafort has ties to John Podesta and one of the first subpoenas issued were about that and his dealings in Ukraine (a country that was in fact caught tampering in election)

Mueller will have buildings named after him for bringing down the biggest conspiracy ever and it isn't Russia election meddling.

What was he guilty of, stopping poor Latinos and asking them to prove they are legal. In a State with a high % of Latino illegals.

He was using common sense and being a detective. What was he meant to do stop Anglo Saxons and Blacks and ask them the same?

Stupid judge. The Sheriff might be racist but not for doing his job.

Yep, because asking for papers without cause violates the 4th and 14th Amendments.
