Red Cross Admits It Doesn't Know How Hurricane Harvey Donation Money Is Spent

Though the Red Cross has a historical reputation for providing relief to victims of natural disasters and other emergencies, the organization?s practices have tarnished its name over the last few years.

Amid the catastrophic earthquake in Haiti in 2010, the Red Cross reportedly accepted nearly $500 million in relief money but built only six homes with the funds even though they claimed they had provided homes to 130,000 people. These failures prompted some Haitians to advise the world against donating funds to the Red Cross.

The organization was accused of diverting resources and supplies to bolster its public image during Hurricane Sandy. As an investigation by NPR and ProPublica found:

Quote:

?The Red Cross national headquarters in Washington ?diverted assets for public relations purposes.?

A former Red Cross official managing the Sandy effort says 40 percent of available trucks were assigned to serve as backdrops for news conferences.?
The outlets reported that ?[d]istribution of relief was ?politically driven instead of [Red Cross] planned,?? noting many organizational failures.

Further, a report released last year by Iowa Sen. Chuck Grassley found that 25% of funds donated to aid in relief for victims of the earthquake was actually spent on internal costs. That amounted to roughly $124 million.

Now, amid the hurricane in Texas, the Red Cross is admitting it currently doesn?t know how the funds it?s receiving are being spent.

This is no surprise. More than 20 years ago in the UK i read a report on these so called charities and disaster funds and if memory serves The Red Cross only spent about 10% of all donations on actually helping people the rest they spent on themselves, like salaries, Infrastructure, etc. :321GFY

The current President and CEO of the American Red Cross (since 2008) is Gail J. McGovern, whose total yearly compensation for 2010 was about $1,037,000 (considerably higher than the $651,957 figure mentioned above) and for 2011 was about $561,000..

I can only imagine what the salary is in 2017 ?

Another point to remember is that The Red Cross has a list of thousands of volunteers . Yes volunteers, that means they cost very little as no money is paid to them other than food and travel and some don't even get that if they live near the disaster .

The problem is what they do is expensive, and it's hard to explain to the public.

I have a friend of mine who works for the American Red Cross. He is a structural engineer and makes huge money.... For most of the year he works locally, low key, works on local building projects that the Red Cross owns. When a large disaster hits he goes on the road and is away for months a time... He has a company car - a nice Jeep - and when he goes on the road everything is paid for.... I wouldn't be surprised if they spend a million dollars a year on him between salary, the car, and him being on the road so much...

Sad if true...

Do you think when you buy a candy bar from Walmart they know where that money is spent? Don't be so fucking stupid. They take donations in and then they use the money as needed. It works just like a business.. It would be impossible to know where every donation is spent..

The Red Cross is a giant org, they operate all over the world. They can do shit no smaller orgs can do but with that comes big overhead.

A lot of money given to charities gets lost on the way to a disaster.
