It happens to all of us. You take a bite out of your jam doughnut and quickly find yourself licking your lips.

It can't be helped, and it turns out there's an actual scientific reason for that - it's all to do with the sugar.

cientist Nathaniel Davis reveals that it?s due to the powerful combination of our super sensitive lips and the immediate reward of the delicious sugar, so the trap is set and resistance is futile.


Multisensory expert from Insight on Foods Davis, explains why the challenge is so tricky: ?Our lips are really sensitive, so when we eat a doughnut and the sugar gets round our mouths, the brain reacts quickly.

"Sugar absorbs the natural moisture on our lips and this means our natural instinct is to immediately lick them.

?We also know that sugar increases serotonin levels (the chemical that controls how happy we feel) and we?re naturally predisposed to want to eat sweet things. So, it?s really hard to resist licking the sugar off.?
